Day 5: North to Guatemala

Destination: Guatemala City - a city of many names.
Guatemala City (Nueva Guatemala de la Asuncion) and  Quuahtlemallan in the original Nahuatl language was
known by its ancestors as the "place of many trees."  It is located on the site of the Pre Columbian Mayan city of Kaminaljuyu founded around 1500 BC. Guatemala City is nestled in a mountain valley called Valle de la Ermita (Hermitage Valley). It is the most populous urban area in Central America.

Map Guatemala

Fun Facts:   The first ever chocolate bar was invented in Guatemala during the Mayan times. Chocolate residue dating back to 460-480 AD has been discovered in a vessel in Guatemala.

Also: Schools here close for ash days rather than snow days. Volcanic ash from the surrounding volcanoes rains down following an eruption, closing schools and making people stay inside.

Art Form:  Fused-glass Jewelry
The seeds for Dunitz & Company were planted in 1989 when founder Nancy Dunitz visited Guatemala for the first time. "I had been employed in finance for several years at the movie studios," notes Nancy. "I was longing to explore the world and focus on my creative side. A vacation took me to Guatemala, and I've been working there ever since."

   Nancy's vision was to work
with  artisans fine tuning designs that would appeal to buyers in the US. She knew that this would create opportunity for many who would otherwise not have it.

The idea for a glass jewelry line  was born when Nancy saw tremendous potential in the glass work of a local artisan named Rosa and began collaborating with her which has created a sustainable business for Rosa, her family and her staff.

Take a look at how this beautiful glass jewelry comes to life.

The  Joanie M collection  was  named in honor of Nancy's mother. She quipped, "My Mom was quite the fashionista, so this is a wonderful tribute to her sense of style and color."

Being based in Hollywood, CA, has its perks. Dunitz & Company designs have been spotted in many television shows and movies. Fashion editorials often include her designs.

Dunitz & Company is a member of the Fair Trade Federation. She supports and contributes to several organizations that help those living in the community where the designs are crafted. "Pueblo a Pueblo," is a community-based charity, that funds many grass-root projects including child education and lunch programs as well as mother-infant care.

Where to next? Stay tuned!

I hope you are learning some new information as we travel along. One of my joys is receiving reply e-mails from some of our readers recounting their own travel experiences to places we are visiting. Or commenting on things they are learning. It brings smiles every single time!  If you haven't already done so, invite some friends to come along! There's still room on this journey!

The sun is shining here in Kansas City after lots of rain over the last 24 hours. For all who can, I hope you get to soak up some of that sunshine today. I have bags of mulch just waiting for me and there's nothing quite like pulling weeds and getting my hands into soil to feel "grounded." Happy Saturday, all.  We have a VERY special treat scheduled for our Sunday visit! Watch for the e-mail!

We THANK YOU for your continued online shopping support.  YOU are an important part of what makes World's Window so special!
