A minimum-wage worker can't afford a 2-bedroom apartment anywhere in the U.S.
June 13, 2018

The economy’s booming. Some states have raised minimum wages. But even with recent wage growth for the lowest-paid workers, there is still nowhere in the country where someone working a full-time minimum wage job could afford to rent a modest two-bedroom apartment, according to an  annual report  released Wednesday by the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

Brink: Why have Florida's working-age men left the labor market in droves?
A cancer lurks within Florida’s otherwise rosy job numbers, one that’s been called a quiet catastrophe and an intractable time bomb.

Too many men between the ages of 25 and 54 have stopped working.

Economists call those the prime-age years. Incomes generally rise, houses get bought, retirement plans grow. The ride can be bumpy, but fired and laid-off workers typically get back up and look for new jobs.

Do the math, then consider the impact
Pinellas County Property Appraiser Mike Twitty has created a handy new tool to find out the tax savings they would enjoy if an additional homestead exemption is approved this fall by at least 60 percent of Florida voters. What the calculation doesn't show is the loss that local governments will suffer if the constitutional amendment passes.
