With a much-anticipated unveiling of a portrait to honor a renown woman scientist, mentor and women's rights advocate, Georgetown Women In Medicine celebrated its 25th anniversary with more than a hundred faculty, staff and supporters. 

Addressing the health challenges immigrants face and sharing her own story, Jennifer Huang Bouey, PhD, MPH, associate professor of international health, delivered the 2019 Values Based Lecture.

Georgetown convened global health experts and direct health care providers representing religious organizations for a two-day workshop in Rome to address the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

When the standards students set for themselves in medical school are impractical, the road toward depression can begin to unwind, explained the keynote speaker at this year's "I, Too, Am Georgetown Medicine" event.

Overlooking the Potomac River, 18 students from the School of Medicine spent two days in reflection to explore the intersectionality of faith and medicine during an off-site Catholic retreat.

Donors and supporters, including foreign dignitaries, business leaders, and prominent figures in Washington's health, medicine and law communities, gathered to celebrate the 20th Annual Georgetown Pediatrics Gala.

As director of Georgetown's Memory Disorders Program, R. Scott Turner, MD, PhD, is optimistic about the developments that lie ahead for research in the field as he looks back over the last two decades. 

 




Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center has won the Hyundai Hands-On Contest at the 2019 Washington Auto Show. The contest required six contestants from Children's National & Georgetown Lombardi to remain in contact with a Hyundai vehicle for 50 hours. As the overall winner, Georgetown Lombardi will receive a pediatric cancer research grant from Hyundai for $50,000. In addition, Karen Howenstein (C'93), a grants and contracts administrator and part of a team of three who competed on behalf of Georgetown Lombardi, is the winner of a new 2019 Hyundai Kona.

As part of the University's work to improve the campus network infrastructure, internet and WiFi outages are scheduled for Building D (April 17-18) and the Medical-Dental Building (April 23-24). These outages will allow Verizon and UIS to complete necessary network upgrades. Learn more here.

Georgetown University School of Medicine faculty, students and staff were honored at the 41st Annual Golden Apple Awards on April 6 for their outstanding contributions and commitment to the School of Medicine. See the full list of awardees here.

Jessica Jones, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry and molecular & cellular biology, has been elected to the board of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) for a three-year term commencing July 1. In this role, Jones will join other health professions educators to promote excellence and innovation in teaching, student assessment, program evaluation, instructional technology, human simulation and learner-centered education.

Waddah Al-Refaie, MD, FACS, the John S. Dillon Professor and Regional Chief of Surgical Oncology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, and Surgeon-in-Chief at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, was inducted April 11 as a fellow of the American Surgical Association.

Students in Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE) programs, including Alana Lelo, MD/PhD candidate in the Tumor Biology program, Sikoya Ashburn, a PhD student in the Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience, and Rahim Hirani, a masters student in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, were recognized during the 2019 Graduate Student Awards Ceremony on March 29. Applications now being accepted for the School of Medicine's Cura Personalis Fellowship in Professional Identity Formation and Coaching, a teaching-learning program that allows clinicians to further develop skills in mentorship by facilitating the formation and development of medical students. Faculty and affiliated-faculty physicians may apply here by May 3 to be considered.

James Giordano, PhD, MPhil, a professor in the departments of neurology and biochemistry and chief of the Neuroethics Studies Program in the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics, has been awarded a 2019 Alumni Achievement Award by The Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), where he earned a PhD in psychology/biopsychology.

Faculty members and academic professionals were honored at the 2019 Spring Faculty Convocation with Vicennial Medals for 20 years of service to the University (gold for full-time employees and silver for part-time). Medical Center honorees included Lijun Li, MD, assistant professor of oncology, and Todd Waldman, MD, PhD, professor of oncology.

A novel clinical trial aims to reverse the cause of a common problem among older women - accidental urine leakage - by using a patient's own muscle cells. The study, conducted by Georgetown University researchers at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, is for women with stress urinary incontinence and is underway in the Washington area.

Global health security expert Rebecca Katz, PhD, MPH, and global health legal and policy expert Alexandra Phelan, LLM, LLB, responded to the decision by the World Health Organization to decline declaring the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

 




DC native Sinclair Blue (SFS'20), who hopes to one day help reduce health disparities in the District, is one of 62 undergraduates selected from 199 finalists as 2019 Truman Scholars. Winners receive $30,000 toward up to three years of graduate education leading to a public service career and benefit from a network of other scholars through the Truman Scholars Association.
