RESPITE, or   short-term temporary relief, supports caregivers who are caring for loved ones. Respite allows caregivers to step away from their duties to refresh and relax.  Respite is often referred to as "giving the gift of time"

REST is an evidenced-based, national training program which prepares people, in both formal and informal support networks, to learn how to help. NYSCRC has trainers across New York State.

If your organization would like to provide REST Companion Trainings for YOUR volunteer program, the NYSCRC  can connect you with a REST Trainer in your area.  For information contact Sharon Cackett.

Shelli Spinelli from Broome County OFA and director of the Yesteryears program completed her Master Training Requirements by leading her first Train-the- Trainer event. Doris Green and Sharon Cackett became the first in the nation to be trained as REST Regional Trainers. We are now partnering with REST to provide Master Trainings in the northeastern US.  Doris and Sharon went to Chicago to be trained for this new initiative and then immediately trained five Master Trainers from Florida and Minnesota. It was an uplifting and positive experience, and we are excited that NYSCRC is the first coalition to a participate in this pilot!

NYSCRC  MINIGRANT AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT

Congratulations to the two programs that were awarded $5000 to support their volunteer respite programs. REST will be used to train all volunteers and staff.

Broome County Yesteryears Program
The Broome County Office for Aging's Yesteryears program recently implemented Saturday volunteer respite serving older adults and their caregivers. The Saturday REST program provides caregivers with three hours of respite one Saturday a month, while participants enjoy a quality structured social experience. The core volunteer base is students from local universities. Respite is available for older adults with cognitive impairments from Broome and surrounding counties.

The Living Well Program in Yates County
The Living Well program in Yates County serves people who have memory impairment. The funding for this project will lay a solid foundation to include appropriate training using the REST training model, recruitment of qualified volunteer and marketing of the project. The c ounty did not have a free respite service for people living with dementia and their caregivers. This program will provide a safe, stimulating, engaging array of activities and food for those living with dementia while offering caregivers time to rejuvenate and relax.

Legislative Update

Assembly Passes Legislation to Add Bereavement to Paid Family Leave Act  Press Release

National Respite Coalition requests Advocacy Action!

In early spring, the House and Senate Appropriations committees began work on the FY 2019 Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill. This bill will include funds for programs administered by the Department of Health and Human Services to support family caregivers, including the Lifespan Respite Care and National Family Caregiver Support programs (NFCSP).

With escalating need, additional funding is critically needed. The National Respite Coalition and its national, state and local partners are requesting $5 million for Lifespan Respite and an additional $21.7 million for the NFCSP in FY 2019, but we need YOUR HELP. And we need it quickly!

Advocacy must be ongoing! Continued action is still needed to make sure we build on the small increases both programs enjoyed in FY 2018. Educating your senators and House members through personal visits and phone calls are the best ways to be effective.  Here are ways to help!
  • Personal visits. Need a few tips on how to meet with your member of Congress? See the NRC's Advocacy Tools
  • Call or email. Call your representatives and senators and urge them to support funding for Lifespan Respite and the NFCSP in the FY 2019 funding bill.
