" for World Diabetes Day
November is American Diabetes month and November 14 is
World Diabetes Day
, an annual observance marked all across the globe. The international “
Go Blue
” campaign encourages supporters to do just that for the occasion: Dress in blue and
go blue
at home by putting a blue bulb in your porch light or lighting a blue candle. Let it shine! “
Going Blue
” is something we UM people already know how to do well!

Clinical Translational Research Scholars Program
The MDiabetes Clinical Translational Research Scholars Program seeks to identify and support the most promising early-stage scholars focused on clinical research relevant to diabetes. MDiabetes Clinical Translational Research Scholars Program will provide up to 50% salary support for up to 3 years, protecting this time from clinical care duties to allow successful clinical research scholarly activities. The MDiabetes Clinical Translational Research Scholars Program will also provide strong mentoring regarding research and career advancement.

DiaComp Pilot and Feasibility Program Funding Awarded to Dr. Rodica Busui
|
Congratulations to Dr. Rodica Busui on receiving funding from DiaComp to support the
Frontiers in Diabetes Complications Symposium.
DiaComp
is the Diabetic Complications Consortium supported by NIDDK.
The symposium will be held in the second half of 2020
at the University of Michigan and
will be co-sponsored by MDiabetes, the Michigan Diabetes Research Center and the Michigan Center for Diabetes Translational Research.

On October 11th, MDiabetes, the Michigan Diabetes Research Center and the Michigan Nutrition Obesity Research Center, with support from Cayman Chemical, presented the Cellular Aspects of Diabetes and Obesity Symposium.
The all-day symposium featured three keynote speakers: Dr. Philipp Scherer from the University of Texas Southwestern, Dr. Doris Stoffers of the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Rajat Singh from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Additional speakers from the University of Michigan and Wayne State University presented on topics related to cell biology, beta cell and metabolic signaling pathways, adipocyte biology and organ crosstalk.

On September 15th Michigan Medicine faculty and staff, along with their friends and families, participated in the JDRF One Walk at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter. Held annually, the walk draws over 2500 participants from the area. Michigan Medicine is a corporate sponsor of the event and has been for many years. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of several department teams and coordination by MDiabetes, the Michigan Medicine team raised over $12,000 this year, in addition to the $15,000 in corporate sponsorship to help fund type 1 diabetes research through JDRF.

This year, for the first time, Michigan Medicine was a corporate sponsor of the ADA Tour de Cure. Held on September 8
th
on Belle Isle in Detroit, participants could cycle, walk or run to help raise funds to support the American Diabetes Association’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of those affected by diabetes.
Michigan Medicine had two teams participate in this year’s event. Together they raised over $5,000 in addition to the $10,000 in corporate sponsorship. MDiabetes looks forward to continuing to support this event in the future.
