April 2019
Dear Fellow Deans,

Greetings from Garden City, New York!

The last few weeks of the semester are upon us with a flurry of activities. The incoming first-year class is being selected through many informational events; celebrations to mark academic accomplishments are being organized; and new initiatives are being planned and implemented. I share a few stories here.

Regards,

Rajib Sanyal, Ph.D.

IMPACT— Internships Matter Big!

With nearly 400 placements every year, our internship program is a significant operation. Four out of five students who graduate complete at least one paid internship. Junior Christina Panouis is just one such student. Her administrative internship at Merrill Lynch is giving her practical business experience to complement her marketing major. The Willumstad School partners with more than 220 employers throughout the New York metropolitan region to provide unrivaled high-impact learning to our students, preparing them well for careers upon graduation. A conservative estimate of the economic value of these internships over the past five years comes to nearly $4 million in direct wages.
ENGAGEMENT—Student Organizations Take the Lead
Our Accounting Society student club organized a panel discussion on “The Impact of Technological Changes on Financial Reporting, Accounting, Auditing and Taxation.” The panelists were industry professionals:  Leonard Labita '82 , vice president and controller, New York Mets; Liz Robinson , audit partner, PwC Private Company Services Group; Victor Parbat , assurance senior associate, PwC New Ventures and Private Company Services; Alaina Sammartano, senior manager-tax technology and transformation, EY; and  Billy Barbaro, senior associate, EY. Rachel Foley , a senior in accounting, moderated the insightful discussion.
INNOVATION—A Fortified Grad Program in Accounting

Our new 30-credit Master of Science in Professional Accounting program is up and running—with the first batch of students graduating this summer. The program features an integrated coaching component—at no additional cost to students—to ensure students are fully prepared to take the CPA Exam. Learn more here .
