This Sunday in Worship from Pastor Darren:
Join us this Sunday at 11 a.m. on NorthChurchIndy.com for guest preacher Rev. Phil Dorrell's message on John 9, and learn why Jesus put mud in a guy's eyes.
|
Here's more on Rev. Dorrell (pictured above): Rev. Philip Dorrell, an Indianapolis native, is a graduate of Butler University and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. He pastored United Methodist churches across central Indiana from 1975 until retiring in 2016.
Phil and Tona have been married since 1972, have three children, and are grateful to have all six grandchildren living within a 20-minutes' drive. In retirement Phil enjoys reading, playing the trumpet, and tutoring adult literacy students.
Tona and Phil have been happy to call North UMC their church home since fall 2016. They appreciate its music, liturgy and preaching, its diversity, and its advocacy.

Is It Well With Your Soul?
We continue to live in challenging times that lay upon our hearts, minds, and souls, but it's important to occasionally step back for a moment and ask, "Is it well with my soul?"
In April 2018 a writing titled "Five Ways to Feed Your Soul" was posted on the United Methodist website. We share it not to suggest a quick fix or feel-good experience, but as a way to practice self-care:
-
Go silent. The early Methodists fasted regularly. Fasting does not simply mean giving up food. Today we might fast from social media, television, or other distracting activities. The goal of fasting is to clear out space and set a feeling of expectation. We set aside distractions or other things in expectation that God will speak a sense of nourishment and satisfaction into us.
-
Fasting and prayer may sound intimidating to many. And while fasting is meant to be a challenge, prayer is not. Prayer, in its simplest form, is speaking to and listening to God. It could take the form of an internal conversation. Or a prayer could utilize a practice like centering prayer.
-
Read. The founder of the Methodist movement, John Wesley, said "all who desire the grace of God are to wait for it in 'searching the scriptures'." His point is that a key means for learning about and experiencing God's goodness is in the stories and ideas of the Bible. Reading the Bible brings us into contact with God's story. Reading other spiritually-based books provides nourishment for the soul too.
-
Do good for someone else. You'll need to be creative during this time of social distancing and not meeting in person with those outside of your safe circle of friends and family. But there continues to be many ways to reach out and help others. The early Methodists practiced "works of mercy" like visiting prisons and hospitals, feeding the hungry, and standing up for the oppressed. Such works uplift our souls. Identify the needs around you and look for a way in which you can interrupt the cycles of brokenness. Special feelings spring up when doing good things for those who can never repay the kindness.
-
Get together. You'll need to be creative with this also — perhaps through telephone calls, emails, cards/notes, or Zoom/online conferencing. We complain that at times people around us drain our souls dry. But in reality people feed our souls even more. In gathering with others we get inspired by their stories and in witnessing the acts of God in their lives. Their ideas shine light and provide nourishment to our own souls. We are especially affected by others when we join them in some of the above-mentioned activities.

Children and Families
Family Sunday School Lesson Is Available
If you and your child missed Sunday school on Jan. 17 you can catch up on our study of "The Beatitudes: Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit" through this video. We learned about what it means to be poor in spirit or to be down and out, and why Jesus chooses to bless us in whatever emotion we are feeling.
This Sunday we will explore the meaning of “those who mourn” and identify ways in which we feel sadness and comfort. The children will hear that God blesses our sadness and promises to comfort us. For more information email Amy.

Here are the children’s worship bulletins for this Sunday, Jan. 24, for kids age 3 and older and 7 and older. Enjoy these while you watch the worship service as a family.
