Oculus is an e-newsletter that is distributed by the OU Gibbs College of Architecture (GCA) during the fall and spring semesters. It features news about student, faculty, staff and alumni accomplishments, as well as events that may be of interest to our community. Note that there is a weekly version of the newsletter for a local audience, and a monthly version for a broader audience. Please share your news and events by noon each Friday to be considered for the following week's issue of Oculus.

Happening now! "The American School Symposium" with Herb Greene

American School architects, including "Prairie House" architect Herb Greene, as well as prominent architectural historian Christopher Mead, will headline the Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture's "The American School Symposium" TODAY in the Gould Hall Buskuhl Gallery, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The event, made possible with support from the OU Presidential Dream Course program, will be streamed live on YouTube for those unable to attend in person.

GCA Student Journal Telesis to Launch at American School Symposium

Everyone is invited to attend the launch of  Telesis, the Gibbs College of Architecture's student-run journal! Join us following  The American School Symposium  for the presentation of the journal, and an opportunity to see this exciting collection of student, faculty, and invited guests' work related to the theme " Design Against ."

The American School "Renegades at Bizzell" Exhibit Featured in The Architect's Newspaper

A comprehensive review of the "Renegades: Bruce Goff and the American School of Architecture at Bizzell" exhibition recently appeared in The Architect's NewspaperIn the piece, associate editor Sydney Franklin writes "Most architecture students study design precedents or build upon knowledge gained in history courses, but one mid-century educator repeatedly told young minds instead:  Do not try to remember.  ... [I]n Goff's classes, it was all about creativity."

GCA Alumni Honored During 2019 AIA Central Oklahoma Honor Awards Ceremony

Many GCA alumni were recognized during the 2019 AIA Central Oklahoma Honor Awards ceremony, held on Friday, April 12. The ceremony also featured a keynote address by GCA Dean Hans E. Butzer and Torrey Butzer, of Butzer Architects and Urbanism, and Gavin McMillan, principal at Har greaves Landscape Architects. Together, they shared details about Oklahoma City's downtown Scissortail Park project .

GCA Honored With 2019 "Partner Award" From OU Libraries

The Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture was recently honored with OU Libraries' annual "Partner Awards," recognizing the teamwork it took to put together the major exhibition of The American School archival documents and related materials, entitled "Renegades: Bruce Goff and the American School of Architecture at Bizzell."

Students Honored for Environmental Scholarship, Advocacy

Two student researchers from Dr. Angela Person and Dr. Randy Peppler's Environmental Sustainability Working Group (ESWG) summer 2018 cohort were recently honored with significant environmental awards.
  • Maya Henderson, an OU junior, was named a 2019 Udall Scholar. This is a national award that recognizes sophomore or junior college students committed to careers related to the environment, Native American public policy or health care.
  • Sarah Melcher, an OU senior, was named the 2019 Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) - Oklahoma Chapter Scholarship recipient. This award honors promising undergraduates each year, in particular those with a focus on issues related to waste.

Architecture Assoc. Professor Represents City of Norman at the International Network of Michelin Cities Event

Associate professor of Architecture Dave Boeck recently represented the City of Norman, sister city to Clerment-Ferrand, France, at the International Network of Michelin Cities  held March 27-29, 2019, in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, recent Green Capital of the European Union. While at the conference, Boeck participated in many presentations, city meetings, labs, and tours including the Bilbao Guggenheim and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

Division of Architecture Exhibit Features Student Analyses of "Architectural Agendas"

The OU Division of Architecture (DivA) is hosting the exhibition, " Architectural  Agendas: An Exhibition of Contemporary Design Discourse," in the Gould Hall Buskuhl Gallery. This exhibition presents graduate and upper-division undergraduate students' analyses of over 20 contemporary architectural theory and history media, including the journals Perspecta, Frank Lloyd Wright Quarterly, Lotus International, Architectural Research Quarterly and more. The students are advised by Prof. Deborah Richards and Dr. Angela Person in "Research and Critical Writing" (ARCH 4543/5543).

OU Architecture Library to Present "Building and Training" Exhibition

Designed for the University of Oklahoma Architecture Library, "Building and Training" is an exhibition of work by Art & Tech graduate student Daniel Giles Helm. Learn more here.

You're Invited! Visit the Citizen Potawatomi Nation with Dr. Jim Collard, Director of Planning and Economic Development

Students, staff, and faculty are invited to join the Division of Regional and City Planning on a visit to Citizen Potawatomi Nation with Faculty of Practice, Jim Collard, and Assistant Professor, C. Aujean Lee.  The visit will include visiting the Eagle Aviary, the Cultural Heritage Center, and lunch at FireLake Fry Bread Taco--all establishments owned and run by the tribe.

Tulsa Urban Design Studio Juries to be Held April 27 at Tulsa Foundation for Architecture

On Saturday, April 27th, students pursuing the Master of Urban Design degree at OU-Tulsa will be presenting their capstone projects. Each student was encouraged to pursue an original design or research projects that benefits Tulsa and Oklahoma. Projects include Robbie Wing's "Towards an Understanding of Wholeness," Daniel Jeffries' "Lively and Livable: Reinvigorating 2nd Street," Saudamini Inamdar's "City Gateways for Broken Arrow," Ray Powell's "Explorer Park Placemaking," Joel Hensley's "Cottage Communities: Macro to Micro," and Katie Wing's "Exploring Perceptions of Safety: Denver Avenue Station."

Join us for a final review of their work!

EarthMonth@OU to Host Series of Distinguished Lectures, Events Throughout April 2019

EarthMonth@OU is OU's annual celebration of Earth Month. It consists of a series of campus and public events focused on local and global environmental concerns sponsored by members of the University of Oklahoma's Environmental Portfolio and others.  This year, EarthMonth@OU will host a series of lectures featuring experts from around the country, including talks that address the history of environmental movements, approaches to SuperFund sites, and the intersections of Christianity, climate and culture.

Community Conversation: The School to Prison Pipeline; Unpacking How Educational Policies are Complicit

The office of University Community invites you to join our latest Community Conversation with Dr. Joy Thomas. Dr. Thomas will lead a seminar investigating how school policies pave the way for students' criminalization rather than their education. This seminar will address the skewed trend of suspensions and expulsions of African American students in addition to the effects of blackness criminalization.

GCA Alumnus to Offer "Drawing on Location" Rendering Class through Norman Firehouse Art Center

Join OU GCA alumnus Fred Schmidt, FAIA, for a "drawing on location" rendering class, hosted by the Firehouse Art Center in Norman. Schmidt has made numerous contributions to the architecture profession in Oklahoma. He was recently honored with the AIA's Williams Wayne Caudill Award, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award for distinguished leadership. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and a past President of AIA Central Oklahoma Chapter.
