This week MAFP won several awards in the AAFP Outstanding Chapter Awards for Membership. The AAFP encourages friendly competition among states each year during the membership renewal process, and every April announces these award winners. The awards are listed above. Congratulations to our Academy Committee and staff for their hard work in increasing and retaining our membership.
128 Attending Spring Conference
Always popular because of its connection to the Spring Fling for residents and students, the MAFP Spring Conference will be held next weekend in Jackson with more than 128 people already registered and 18 exhibitors signed up.

LOOKING FOR A PARTNER IN YOUR PRACTICE? Come meet family medicine residents and students at this conference. There will be networking time in the exhibit hall and during breaks. They would love to meet you!

IMAGES IN MISSISSIPPI MEDICINE: To celebrate 70 years of MAFP, we will feature MAFP past president Dr. Luke Lampton and Karen Evers of MSMA, authors of the book, 'Images in Mississippi Medicine,' at the Friday night crawfish boil. For a $50 or more donation, you may have a signed copy. MAFP staff enjoyed the interesting  History is Lunch presentation given by Lampton and Evers Mar. 27 at the Two Mississippi Museums.

CRAWFISH BOIL: For the seventh year running, Dr. Brad Suggs, a MAFP member family physician from Brandon (who is the current MAFP Foundation president) will serve up delicious mudbugs, sausage, corn, potatoes and mushrooms at our Friday night crawfish boil. You don't want to miss it!

Two Committees Wrap Up the Year
Two MAFP Committees met this week by phone to finalize activities for the year and wrap up goals that were set at their September meetings.

The Academy Committee, chaired by Dr. Bill Grantham of Madison, met to discuss membership numbers and how to encourage renewals.

The Public Awareness Committee, chaired by Dr. Carlos Latorre of Vicksburg, met to discuss ways to engage members online and receive publicity for doing good works in the community.

Interested in serving on a committee? Let us know!
Pictured are several local donations on the Silent Auction table at last year's Annual Meeting.
Please Request Silent Auction Donations in Your Town
The MAFP Foundation is July 23 at the Annual Meeting in Destin, and it's not too early to seek donations from YOUR hometown! The auction is a success each year because members/spouses ask local businesses in their towns to donate items. Please seek those local donations! E-mail Jewell Buckley with any questions about the Silent Auction.
'Meaningful Connections in the Community' Wellness Session
The next Wellness Wednesdays phone call, " Building Meaningful Connections in the Community for You and Your Patients" will be held Wednesday, April 17, from 11:15 am - 12 noon CST. The session will help you:
  • Understand the why and how of connecting with your community and how it relates to physician well-being
  • Learn the best tools and techniques for patient engagement and addressing Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)
  • Learn how to help your community in times of disaster
  • Develop a plan for patient engagement for your practice.
Dr. Kim Yu of California will be the guest speaker. Wellness Wednesdays is a production of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians and all AAFP members may participate at no charge.

Fellow Convocation Next Week
If you have earned the AAFP Degree of Fellow and have not been formally inducted, now is your chance. We will have a convocation ceremony April 13-14 during the Spring Conference. Alert us if you are able to be inducted!
Vaccine Update for 2019
The CDC Child Immunization Schedule Changes for 2019 have been announced, with the following updates:
  • Those who receive a TDAP or diptheria and tetanus toxoids and acellar pertussis vaccine at age 7-10 years as part of the catch-up series should still receive the routine doses of Tdap at age 11-12 years. Although the Mississippi 7th grade School Immunization Requirement will remain as "Tdap vaccine given on or after the 7th birthday meets the school requirement" but the Miss. Department of Health recommends following this new recommendation.
  • There is still a shortage of pediatric Hepatitis B vaccine. Providers may want to consider using a combination vaccine that includes Hepatitis B. Link to the recommendations
  • CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics has announced they will no longer express a preference for the flu shot over the nasal vaccine for the 2019-20 flu season. Also, the new flu vaccine will have a new H3N2 component, which will hopefully improve efficacy.
