 A portion of Interstate 70 in Utah is a 110 mile stretch without food, gas, rest areas; it's simply two lanes and beautiful views, but nothing else. Drivers must prepare for the journey by ensuring they have enough gas for their cars/trucks, that they have made the pit stop to use the facilities, prior to embarking on that long stretch of highway, where many of run out of gas and found themselves in a real bind.
The Chicago Cubs baseball team blamed their lackluster finish in the regular season last year because they finished the year without an off day from early August until mid-September. While I'm not inclined to feel bad for millionaires living out their dreams of playing a game as a career, the physical toll of travel, and the grind of sports sometimes, especially when you are late in a six month season, can cause lack of focus and accelerate fatigue.
Lastly, Singapore Airlines is introducing non-stop service from Singapore to Newark, New Jersey, a 19 hour flight, as the longest flight in the world. That's a lot of recirculated air to breathe in.
The last nine weeks of the school year is that long haul without a gas station or pit stop. It's the grind of the end of the season. It's the nonstop flight. Spring Break to Memorial Day is a tough stretch. It's important to build in the mental breaks when we can. But there is a big difference between mental breaks and mental lapses.
Let's remain committed to ensuring our students build in some downtime on the weekends; unplug from technology; and get plenty of rest throughout the week - to ensure we peak this last nine weeks, not crawl across the finish line.

Sgt. Ogburn is a retired Florida Highway Patrol officer. She has three children and is a sergeant for the OCPS Police Department. Her husband is Deputy Chief Vince Ogburn of The Orlando Police Department. She loves the students and she has already been a positive role model for the faculty, staff and students!

COFFEE, EGGS, OR POTATOES?
 Once upon a time a high school student complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn't know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.
Her father, a restaurant chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot.
He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing.
After 20 minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the boiled eggs out and placed them in a bowl.
He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her he asked. 'Daughter, what do you see?'
'Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,' she hastily replied.
'Look closer,' he said, 'and touch the potatoes.' She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.
'What is the point?' she asked.
Her dad then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity - the boiling water.
However, each one reacted differently.
The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak.
The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard.
However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.
'Which are you?' he asked his daughter. 'When adversity or life's problems knock on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?'
