ATIXA Implements Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Policy for Members

Upon recommendation of the Advisory Board, ATIXA has implemented clear governing policies and procedures related to sexual violence, sexual harassment, and sex discrimination between or by members. While our leadership hopes that such misconduct will not occur within our ranks, we know that it could happen, and we want to be prepared to respond appropriately if it does. Holding ourselves to the highest standards is a pre-requisite for ATIXA’s members to be seen as leaders in the field who have authority to hold others accountable for such misconduct on our campuses and in our schools. Ratified by the ATIXA Advisory Board on April 8th, the newly implemented policy and procedure is based on ATIXA’s own One Policy, One Process (1P1P) model. This may be the first sexual harassment policy implemented by a major higher education association, and an important step in ATIXA’s evolution. Review the complete policy here.

Tip of the Week

Mandatory Expulsion - Not A Best Practice

Tip of the Week authored by Brett A. Sokolow, J.D., Executive Director, ATIXA

What do you think of recent student demands requesting schools implement mandated expulsion for rape cases?

First, let’s put “rape” in quotes, not to diminish the severity of the act, but to acknowledge the fact that colleges don’t have rape cases, and never have. Rape is a crime, to be determined by criminal justice authorities. Criminal justice authorities have rape cases. Colleges experience sex discrimination, sometimes in a physical form that parallels the crime of rape, but is not the same thing as a crime. The policy term often used is “non-consensual sexual intercourse.”  So, let’s rephrase the question as, “should expulsion be mandatory for cases of non-consensual sexual intercourse on college campuses?”  My answer is absolutely not.

ATIXA and Trivie now offering 1-Year Free U of Nine Trial

U of Nine is an app-based solution to help colleges and universities educate students and employees about sexual violence, sexual harassment, intimate partner violence and stalking. This is a cost-effective way to offer awareness and education content for audiences that can be hard-to-reach.

U of Nine modules are quiz-based, and have been created by ATIXA, the Association of Title IX Administrators, in collaboration with leading education quiz-based training app company, Trivie.

U of Nine is approaching the problem of campus sexual misconduct from a fresh, potent and technologically savvy perspective – engaging students on these important topics via their mobile devices. ATIXA has assembled two dozen subject matter experts from across higher education to review and develop the gamified, quiz-based content for U of Nine. Each quiz was subjected to intense focus-group analysis, along with feedback from students on pilot-site campuses around the country. Pilot sites ranged from community colleges to four-year residential universities and online institutions. U of Nine allows for longitudinal assessment of attainment of learning outcomes.

Institutions that sign up by June 1st will receive a year of UNLIMITED FREE use of the U of Nine app. Provide your students and employees with access to all 5 modules, including sexual harassment, consent, know your policy, sexual violence and bystander engagement
