August 2018 Rock County Clover Update
Here's what's new on the Rock County 4-H website this month!
Robotics Kick-Off on August 11th

Rock County 4-H is having a competitive Lego Robotics team again this year! Youth ages 9-14 are eligible to compete in the First Lego League competition. Our team is planning to begin practices on August 11 at 1:00 p.m. this year. The meeting will be in the Extension Office Community Room at 2 Roundwind Road in Luverne.

You are welcome to come to this first practice to learn more about the team and find out if you are interested in competing.

MN State Fair Trip Meeting

Did you earn a trip to the Minnesota State Fair? If so, please plan to attend the State Fair trip meeting on Monday, July 30th at 5:30 p.m. (before post-fair clean-up) at the foodstand patio. At this time, you will receive the information about your trip along with forms that must be filled out and signed by yourself and a parent or guardian. Please remember to bring a checkbook to pay for meals and lodging. The State Fair General Project Encampment is August 26-28th and the Livestock Encampment is August 22nd-26th.

4-H Records-Don't Forget!

We all know how nice it is to sit back and relax now that Fair is over. But those projects aren't REALLY done until the project record is done too. Today, 4-H records are meant to be a way of keeping track of what you have learned and done in 4-H, and a way to save great memories for the years to come. You can go online, download, and type your records on the computer OR you can fill out the colored paper record pages that we have at the office.

Ambie Applications-Please Apply!

Rock County 4-H has a great team of youth leaders that do a lot for our county. That is why we would like all 9th grade or older youth looking for more leadership opportunities to apply to become a Rock County Ambie!

The Ambies (short for Ambassadors) are a group of youth leaders who help with events such as New Family Night, Day Camps, Project Day, Cloverbud meetings and more.

These scholarship are available for college-bound 4-H youth

Two scholarships are being offered for Minnesota 4-H youth pursuing post-secondary studies at accredited colleges and universities. Over $58,000 is awarded annually through a competitive application process.

Message from Dorothy: Be fearlessly committed to growing more true leaders

In her last article as Minnesota 4-H state leader, Dorothy Freeman encourages all youth, volunteers and families to be fearless in growing true leaders.

Nominate a 4-H volunteer for Salute to Excellence

Volunteers give much to the Minnesota 4-H program! Consider nominating an outstanding volunteer for a 2019 4-H Salute to Excellence Award. All nomination materials are due by Sept. 15, 2018.

Plan to attend annual volunteer training this fall

Powerful things happen for youth when they're in a positive relationship with caring adults. The 2018 annual volunteer training, "4-H Grows Relationships," will ready youth and adult volunteers to connect to young people in meaningful ways. Watch for dates and locations across the state this fall and plan to bring a team of youth and adult volunteers.

More 4-H news this month
Make sure your club explores these new zoonotic disease and agritourism resources being sent to every county across the state. Then enter your team into a video contest for a chance at winning a Glo-Germ lesson kit for your group - The winning team will have the chance to work with a professional videographer to re-produce their video as a commercial for national distribution!

Again in 2018 the Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association will be providing $30 cash awards to all 4-H members who complete a livestock demonstration during 4-H livestock weekend at the Minnesota State Fair. Start planning your livestock demonstration today!
