The official ballot of the 2018 elections will be set at noon on Friday, June 22, 2018, by the Monroe County Supervisor of Elections Office. At 5 pm that evening, Hometown! will host its "Meet the Candidates" event at The Studios of Key West, 533 Eaton St., Key West. The event is free and open to the public.
All qualified candidates will have the opportunity to take the microphone to speak directly to voters on the issues most important to their political races. Voters will also have the opportunity to personally meet the candidates one-on-one before and after the presentations.
2018 Primary races include: US Representative, State Representative, County Commission District 2, School Board District 4, KEYS Energy Seat D, Key West Mayor, City Commission District 4 and City Commission District 5.
The event will be available via live-stream on Hometown's website (

) and recorded for future viewing on YouTube. Members of the press will be attending.
There will be a cash bar and light appetizers.

Summer Dance Workshop at Key West Theater
The Key West Theater will be holding an exciting new summer dance workshop from July 17th-27th for students ages 11 to 18 called "Theatrical Dance." In the workshop, taught by local performer and teacher Heather-May Potter, students will learn how to perform short movement phrases in dance as it applies to musical theater. They will also rehearse group and solo numbers that can be used for performance in revue or variety show productions.
Theatrical Dance teacher Heather-May Potter attended NYU's Tisch School of the Arts as an undergraduate dance major and has a Master's Degree in Education from Bank Street College in New York City. Heather has performed in Key West on the stages of The Waterfront Playhouse, The Red Barn Theatre, Tennessee Williams Theater, The Studios of Key West, among others.
She originally came to Key West in 2009 from New York City where she danced with the Stanley Love Performance Group and other New York Cty choreographers at venues including Dixon Place, Judson Church, The Tunnel, The Kitchen, and Location One.
Theatrical Dance classes will be held weekdays from 1pm-2:30pm beginning July 17th through July 27th at the Key West Theater and are open to students from age 11 to 18. The Key West Art & Historical Society celebrates 75 years of electric power in the Lower Florida Keys with
"Powering Paradise: 75th Anniversary of Keys Energy,
"
a new exhibitthat opens Friday, July 27, with a special reception held from 6:00pm-7:30pm in the Bumpus Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.
Headquartered in Key West, Florida, Keys Energy Service (KEYS) provides electricity from Key West to the Seven Mile Bridge and serves more than 28,000 customers. The exhibition explores the history and continuing operations of this nationally-recognized Public Power Provider utility for the Lower Florida Keys, from its initial Key West-only services in 1943 to its 1987 transmission line connection with the mainland power grid.

Get ready to get salty! The only Florida Keys spearfishing tournament is just around the summer bend with the 7th Annual That's What She Shot Spearfishing (TWSS) Tournament, June 22-24. The event invites women, men, and juniors to participate and non-fishing friends to party along dockside to help raise funds for Womankind, a Key West nonprofit medical center that provides the community with affordable primary care and high-quality family planning, with special subsidized support programs for those that need it.
TWSS kicks off on Friday, June 22 at 7pm, with a mandatory captain's meeting at the new weigh-in station at 6840 Front Street, Stock Island (the dock property between the old Fishbusterz and Hogfish Bar & Grille). The Sunday 2-5pm weigh-in welcomes the public to party right along with participants, with all proceeds to benefit Womankind. Live music, drinks by Florida Keys Brewery, food trucks, and a variety of vendors will be featured, as will a focus on sustainability and our environmental impact-BYO glass/mug/cup and skip single-use plastic for the day.

The June lecture for the Marathon Library Lecture Series will feature Cory Walter, Staff Biologist and Coordinator of the BleachWatch program at Mote's Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration (IC2R3). Walter will train divers and snorkelers interested in volunteering for the Florida Keys BleachWatch program. This program provides early warnings of potential coral bleaching events in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary during the warm summer months.
No RSVP is required. The training will start promptly at 3 p.m. The Marathon Branch of the Monroe County Library is located at 3251 Overseas Highway, Marathon, FL 33050.

Stephanie Hellstrom sends regards and this Info. : The Board of Directors of the Anne McKee Artists Fund recently awarded 11 project-based grants to Florida Keys visual, performing and literary artists. The awards support specific creative projects proposed by each recipient. Established in 1994 by Anne McKee, a longtime Key West resident and supporter of the arts, the Fund assists talented individuals with qualified creative endeavors. Since its inception, the Fund has awarded over $300,000 to visual artists, writers and performing artists who live in Monroe County.

Exhibit Seeks to Inspire Action and Drive Conservation of Our Oceans and the Vulnerable Marine Life Within It
Blue Sphere Foundation, a not for profit that works to safeguard the planet's oceans and halt the destruction of threatened marine species and habitats announced today, in collaboration with Southampton Arts Center, the unveiling of a new worldwide art exhibit called "Light on Shadow" by photographer and conservationist Shawn Heinrichs. The exhibit will run May 26 through July 16 and is an intimate journey through both the beauty of marine life and the reality that threatens their existence, generating a powerful warning against complacency. "Powering Paradise: 75th Anniversary of Keys Energy,

a new exhibitthat opens Friday, July 27, with a special reception held from 6:00pm-7:30pm in the Bumpus Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.
Headquartered in Key West, Florida, Keys Energy Service (KEYS) provides electricity from Key West to the Seven Mile Bridge and serves more than 28,000 customers. The exhibition explores the history and continuing operations of this nationally-recognized Public Power Provider utility for the Lower Florida Keys, from its initial Key West-only services in 1943 to its 1987 transmission line connection with the mainland power grid.

Southernmost Pre-Columbian Archaeology Site is the subject of next Key West Art & Historical Society Distinguished Speaker Series presentation
On Thursday, June 28, Key West Art & Historical Society's Distinguished Speaker Series welcomes historian Ryan Harke to the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street, where he will present research from his dissertation on the "Southernmost Pre-Columbian Site." The 6:00pm presentation investigates the possibility of whether Stock Island was a seasonal fishing ground used by mainland natives or the site of a permanent year-round village.
"Knowing whether it was a year-round village provides a platform for other exciting research in the future," says Harke, a doctoral student and professor of archaeology and anthropology at the University of South Florida. "If it was year-round, how was that culture related to other native chiefdoms on the mainland, like the Tequesta in Miami or the Calusa in southwest Florida?"

The Key West Art & Historical Society celebrates the acclaimed late Key West artist Captain Outrageous in "
That's Outrageous!," a retrospective featuring more than 40 works that explores his pop art style across several different mediums. The exhibit opened April 13, with a special reception held from 6:00pm-8:30pm in the Bryan Gallery at the Custom House Museum, 281 Front Street.
Spanning nearly four decades in Key West, Captain Outrageous imprinted his indelible mark on the island with both his colorful artwork and personality. He made the world his canvas and painted thousands of items - bicycles, scooters, furniture, clothing, mannequins, cars, camper vans, sinks, musical instruments, telephones, and even toilet seats - with a pop art design style à la Roy Lichtenstein, but with a flair and humor decidedly his own. A true Key West character, he embodied the spirit of the island, and his creations are celebrated and collected by many.

Key West' Historic Seaport garners the Meritorious Achievement Award for Organizational Achievement during the 40th Annual Florida Trust 2018 Florida Preservation Conference.
The Florida Trust for Historic Preservation was founded in 1978 and is Florida's nonprofit dedicated to protecting the state's architectural, historical and archaeological heritage. With a strong focus on advocacy, education and stewardship, the Florida Trust serves as a steward for historic properties throughout Florida and has saved a number of unique and historic state treasures.
The Florida Preservation Awards recognizes individuals, organizations, businesses and agencies that have made a significant impact in preserving Florida's history. Award categories range from Infill Design and Green Buildings to Archaeology and Preservation Education/Media.
The award is in recognition of the significant achievement in the preservation of Florida's rich heritage. The
City of Key West and the duly appointed
Bight Management District Board oversees the preservation and protection of the history and character of the Key West Historic Seaport. The Historic Seaport has supported many industries vital to the economy and overall way of life in the Florida Keys and Key West for more than 200 years. From fishing to tourism, nearly 100 businesses and organizations rely on the Historic Seaport to support their families and livelihood today.
"It is truly an honor to have the Key West Historic Seaport recognized for all of the preservation efforts that have gone into not only protecting its heritage but its evolution over the years as well. Key West is proud of its record of preservation and will continue with more projects in the future," said Craig Cates, Mayor of Key West.
On behalf of the City of Key West and the Historic Seaport, the award was accepted by Mr. Dana Pollitt and Ms. Julie Ruffolo, members of the Historic Seaport team in charge of promoting, advertising and marketing the Seaport.
"We are excited and honored to receive this Meritorious Achievement Award for Organizational Achievement on behalf of the City of Key West and the Historic Seaport," said Dana Pollitt, Partner with
ADEPT Public Relations. "The tremendous efforts of City staff led by Port Director Doug Bradshaw and Deputy Port Director Karen Olson along with the expert guidance of the Bight Management District Board has resulted in record fiscal performance of the Historic Seaport. It's wonderful to receive this historic preservation recognition from such a highly regarded organization like the Florida Trust.
The Historic Seaport has such a rich history and we applaud the City's efforts to preserve its story while having the foresight to recognize that it could become a top travel destination," concluded Pollitt.

Dive into Summer Coral Camp!
Coral Camp 2018 Registration is Open! When school lets out, Coral Camp begins. 6-12 year
old youths explore and learn about our surrounding marine environment through exciting
education activities at the Reef Relief Environmental Center in Key West. Each fun-packed day,
campers experience hands-on-learning, interactive games and outdoor activities. Activities
include science and art projects in addition to exciting field trips around Key West. Campers
also experience four days of snorkeling: one day practicing their snorkeling skills at the beach,
one day in the seagrass beds and sponge gardens, and two days snorkeling at the reef.
Weekly sessions begin June 4th
and go through August 10th. Sessions are limited to 25 campers
per session. A limited number of scholarships are available to those who qualify. Coral Camp
runs Monday through Friday from 8:30am- 4:30pm. Camp fees are $225 per child per week or a
discounted rate of $200 per child per week when registering for multiple weeks or siblings. Space is limited! Reserve a slot today!
