June 22, 2018

Hi all,

Here are the details for the August workshop that I teased you with last week. Designed to help YOUR LOCAL plan (plenty of time for planning at the workshop!) and implement (we can work with you when fall comes around) a successful membership drive to kick off the 2018-19 school year.

We are encouraging you to bring a team of at least three people from your Local, so you can start thinking about fun people to bring along. Click on the image or here to register. Click for a flyer.

Start talking with your friends today!

The Summer Summit is a once-a-year convening of all the people who care the most about what our public schools need to thrive and meet the needs of all students. This year's event promises to be the best one yet - with a full day of amazing breakouts led by experts on a wide range of topics, a keynote presentation from Jitu Brown of Chicago's Journey for Justice campaign, a Blue Ribbon Plenary Session with Rep. Joel Kitchens and Dr. Julie Underwood, a morning welcome from Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Evers . . . and so much more!  Just announced: special guest speaker at the optional dinner will be Matt Rothschild of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. Stay tuned for the full lineup of breakouts and speakers - you won't be disappointed!  Click here to learn more - and register (includes lunch).

Update on transition to lifetime licenses ...

WEAC continues to work with DPI to make the transition from professional and master licenses to lifetime licenses under Act 59 as seamless as possible. At this time, conversion of professional and master educator licenses to lifetime licenses is complete. You can view your license by clicking here. If you were a Professional Educator when the biennial budget was enacted last fall, your license status should now show "Lifetime License" valid from  9/22/2017 , the date Act 59 was signed.

If you wish to print a copy of your Lifetime license, please follow the four numbered steps below:
  1. Access your ELO Account
  2. Navigate to the "Manage Your Existing Licenses" section of the Quick Start Menu
  3. Choose "Print license certificate" from the drop down menu and click "Go!"
  4. Based on your browser's default behavior, a file will be available for you to open or download.

While a background check is required every 5 years, DPI does not currently have a process in place for background checks. At this time there is no action required for educators to submit background checks even if your license was set to expire in 2018. Please watch WEAC communications in the coming months. We will provide instructions once DPI has a background check process in place.

If you were an initial license holder at the time of the passage of Act 59 your license was converted to a provisional license with an expiration date of 2020. Previous semesters of "successful" teaching can be applied toward a lifetime license application. Currently DPI does not have a method in place to report semesters of successful teaching. However, you could use your QEI account. The QEI has developed an excellent tracking system for successful semesters and WEAC has written confirmation that the QEI will be accepted to track successful semesters. For more details log in at https://myqei.org/.

Here's a FAQ sheet with answers to these and other questions.

Please contact Jeff Baas at [email protected] if you have questions related to your license.
