81st Annual OLC Enjoyed as Premier
Logging Equipment Show
|
|
More outside exhibits than in the previous eight decades of the OLC were on display this year at the 81
st
Annual Oregon Logging Conference (OLC). Exhibitors were at the show talking about products and services available to the logging, construction, trucking, and heavy equipment industries.
Thank you to all who participated in the seminars and workshops, in the new and annual activities, and to those who came to look and learn about our industry. This hard work and dedication is the reason for the success of the OLC.
Thousands of people from around the world visited the event, held at the Lane Events Center and Fairgrounds. The theme for the 81
st
Annual OLC was
Building Products for Building Futures
and OLC president Jim Dudley said, “it reflects the power of our industry to grow our nation’s future. At this year’s conference we took the opportunity to educate the next generation workforce for the timber industry,” Dudley added, “and introduce ourselves to the public at large.”
Of particular importance, and very well attended this year was the Future Forestry Workers Career Day, held in the Livestock Arena on the Lane County Fairgrounds (see separate article).
Guest speakers were Dr. Anthony B. Davis, Interim Dean of Forestry at Oregon State University, and Erin Isselmann, Executive Director of Oregon Forest Resources Institute (OFRI). Dr. Davis was focused on the Building Products piece of the OLC theme, speaking about renewable wood products beginning to replace high rise concrete and steel building materials. Isselmann highlighted the many education programs at OFRI addressing the Building Futures piece of the OLC theme.
Conference seminar and Panels consisted of new technology in logging including presentations on innovations in cable logging, advantages of grapple logging, and the future of automation: tower logging at night. Seminars included Life Flight landing zone, loading, and capabilities, changes in truck regulations, tier 4 engines and the Oregon and Washington Forest Practices Acts. As well as two seminars presented by Wendy Farrand, Agile In The Woods and Loggers’ Don’t Leave it to Culture.
OLC Conference Manager Rikki Wellman said, “We couldn’t put on this successful show without the support of all of our sponsors, and the participation of all of our vendors. “We are proud to promote and showcase the logging industry,” she added, “and contribute to its continued growth and expansion.

2nd Annual Future Forestry Workers Career Day
Recruiting the Next Generation
|
|
The message to the high school students who attended the second annual Future Forestry Workers Career Day at the Oregon Logging Conference was clear: There are a wide variety of job opportunities available in the timber industry now and in the future. The event shows the need to continue the mutually beneficial relationship between timber industry professionals and the next generation of loggers and forestry workers.
More than 500 High School students from 30 schools attended the 2
nd
Annual Future Forestry Workers Career Day, and participated in hand-on activities including planting seedlings, operating a small excavator, and learning about wild land fire fighting. The students were also able to talk with industry professionals and learn about current jobs available and career pathways, as well as skills needed to pursue those opportunities.
This was not your typical filed trip for the high school students, and there was almost twice the number of students this year than attended the event last year. The focus was on engaging the next generation of workers in the logging, trucking, construction, and other natural resource industries. Diesel mechanics, and heavy equipment operation were also included in the hands-on activities.
The students also had the opportunity to get up close to modern, state-of-the-art logging equipment and hear from professionals currently working in the industry

College Scholarship Applications Being Accepted
by Oregon Logging Conference Foundation
Applicants for scholarships from the Oregon Logging Conference Foundation (OLCF) have until May 1, 2019, to turn in their paperwork. The scholarship application must be received by that date at the Oregon Logging Conference (OLC) Office. The mailing address is P.O. Box 10669, Eugene, OR 97440. The OLCF is the educational arm of the OLC.
Scholarship Applications are reviewed by a committee of six to eight members of the OLCF Board of Directors, and recipients will be selected at the OLCF spring meeting in June 2019. Selected students will be notified by mail, and the students will also be featured in the July edition of OLC NEWS.
Scholarships are available to financially assist students who are studying forestry related subjects such as forest engineering, forest management, forest operations/management, diesel mechanics/heavy equipment operation and maintenance, and welding.
This year, the OLCF scholarship fund will increase by more than $28,000 from the money raises during the auction held during the morning sessions of the OLC on February 21

Educational Activities at the
Oregon Logging Conference
|
The importance of educating students and the general public about the logging industry cannot be underestimated, and this was accomplished through several avenues at the 81st Annual Oregon Logging Conference.
This year, the High School logging skills exhibition was folded in to the Future Forestry Workers Career Day. Attending students were able to watch high school forestry clubs show their skills in choker setting, cable splicing, crosscut sawing, and power bucking. The forestry club students were demonstrating some of the skills needed to go to work in the logging industry.
75 students from 5 Oregon high schools (Waldport, Clatskanine, Philomath, Sweet Home, and Tillamook) competed in the logging skills demonstration.
Several hundred elementary school students visited the Oregon Logging Conference (OLC)on Thursday, February 21
st
. These students walked around the conference to view the equipment on display outdoors, and wander through the inside vendors as well. The elementary school students’ visits are a cooperative effort between the OLC. Oregon Women in Timber, and Forests Today & Forever.
Saturday, the final day of the Oregon Logging Conference, is open to the public with a focus on families and youngsters and introducing them to the logging industry.
Hundreds of people turned out to take part in several activities. There were bird houses to be built, learning how to crosscut saw, seeing live wildlife, and of course enjoying face painting, cotton candy, and popcorn. These family activities all took place in the Wheeler Pavilion on the Lane County Fairgrounds.
