SENIOR ENGINEERING DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT SHOWCASE
Senior Honors Night - Thursday, May 3 at approximately 7:15 PM

Following the senior Engineering Design Exhibition Energy will hold it's annual Senior Honors Night. Although all students are welcome to attend, students who will be recognized will receive a printed invitation this week. The only exception to this is that students who are being recognized for their engineering projects; they will find out that night after judging. If you have any questions, please contact Noelle MacGregor at [email protected]
Saturday, April 21st, Energy staff and families went to the new campus to work on multiple service projects in the neighborhood during the Energy Day of Service. Earlier this month, Energy students participated in a Block Walk, in which they knocked on doors in the area to offer services and identify possible community projects. In a partnership with the Travis Manion Foundation , volunteers followed up on the requested services at four sites: neighborhood homes, local parks, University Christian Church, and Blodgett Urban Gardens. At the church and homes, participants did yard work and completed restorative tasks. At the local parks, participants picked up trash while weeds were pulled and plants were planted at the Urban Gardens. Additionally, Energy opened its campus to our new neighbors, and students led visitors in tours of the new building and hosted several STEM-related activities. After the tours, people were invited to participate in baseball and soccer clinics hosted by the Energy Oilers and Kilowatts. The event had a fantastic turnout and ultimately made a great contribution to the nearby community.

On Sunday, April 22nd, sixty Energy students volunteered in the city-wide
Earth Day celebration at Discovery Green , presented by Green Mountain Energy in partnership with the Citizens Environmental Coalition. Earth Day educates, inspires, and encourages people to take action in their environment. The event featured displays, exhibits, and booths on topics including alternative energy, recycling methods, a farmers market, Canned Acoustica, and more. To promote a "waste-free" event, students acted as Recycling Ambassadors, and they worked in Go-Zero teams to guide attendees in properly disposing of their waste via recycling or compost bins. In addition to sorting recyclables, Recycling Ambassadors educated the attendees about recycling in Houston. At the end of the day, the food waste and compostable food were transported to a composting facility to become valuable nutrient for plants. While recyclables were sent to a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF), the remaining trash was sent to a landfill. In total, over 70 pounds of recyclables and compost were collected!

On April 18th, Energy's valedictorian and salutatorian, Trisha Litong and Christian Kelly, were honored at the annual HISD Scholars Banquet for holding the top two highest grade point averages (GPAs) of their graduating class. At the event, they met the other HISD valedictorians and salutatorians, ate dinner with their dean and parents, and received medallions of achievement from their principal. Both students invited a teacher that has had an impact on their academic and personal growth. Trisha chose Dr. Gibson, her former Engineering teacher and current sponsor of the InvenTeam club, and Christian chose Ms. Harris, his former English teacher. Energy is proud of Trisha and Christian's educational excellence and cannot wait to see what the future holds for these bright students.

On Tuesday, April 17th, Energy's  Name That Book   team competed at the Ryan PD Center Auditorium to pass the preliminary rounds for a chance to compete in this year's finals. Name That Book is a club where students are given a list of 100 books to read within a team. During the tournament, a host reads aloud a quote from a certain piece of literature, and the participants must figure out the title from the quote. Members  Aaliyah McAfee, Gabby Reynaga, Harrison Digs and Tyler Edwards competed against over fifteen other schools. Ms. Martinez, the club sponsor, has done a wonderful job in supporting the team's efforts, along with Cheryl Hensley, a former librarian, and Gordon Herring. The team won 2nd place overall and is looking forward to competing in the final rounds. This Friday, on April 20th, HISD will be live-streaming the competition. To watch,  click here .

On Friday, April 18th, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) held their first Boat Regatta race at Northside High School. The Boat Regatta is intended to learn STEM subjects while having fun in competing with peers. Moreover, the objectives are to build a boat that holds two students using only cardboard and duct tape, to construct paddles with the same materials, to compete in a bracket-style tournament, and to collaborate with team members in creating the best boat possible. In addition, the boats are judged based on their creativity, efficiency, rigidity, race time, and reusability. During the competition, two students were required to get on the boat, paddle to end of the pool for an exchange of two other racers, and then paddle back to the starting point. As a result, their boat was able to make it for both laps but sank in the end. Furthermore, even though their paddles fell apart, leading them with nothing to use but their hands, Energy's SHPE still won the award for the overall highest cumulative points. Congratulations to all the team members, and we hope you continue the hard work!
Iceland International Trip Parent/Student Meeting
Iceland International Trip Parent/Student Meeting - Tuesday,  May 1 at 6:00 PM

Plans for an international trip to Iceland in early June of 2019 are underway! Energy students traveled there two years ago and had a trip of a lifetime. Iceland produces 100% of it's electricity and heat from renewable energy sources and students will learn about this and more first hand! Join us on Tuesday, May 1st at 6:00 PM in the BP Spot to learn more about this opportunity. Students and parents should plan to attend if they are interested in participating in the trip. This opportunity is open to students who are current 9-11th graders and who have not had any level three infractions. If you have any questions, please contact Noelle MacGregor at [email protected]
POSSE SCHOLARS
Is Your Junior Student Our Next Posse Scholar? Attend the Posse Informational Meeting - Tuesday, May 1 at 6:45 PM

The Posse Foundation is a non-profit organization that is currently seeking juniors with extraordinary academic and leadership potential. We will host a student/parent information session for interested families on Tuesday, May 1st at 6:45 PM. Selected Posse Scholars receive full tuition scholarships and other support at one of the following six schools: Texas A&M, Wellesley, UVA, Colby, Carleton, and Bryn Mawr. It's a wide range of schools to appeal to a variety of students. Energy Institute currently has five Posse Scholars! Posse loves our students and thinks they stand out in their dynamic interview process which includes a large group interview where students work in teams to solve problems. If your current junior is interested in becoming a Posse Scholar and landing a full tuition scholarship we highly recommend attending this meeting! If you have any questions, please contact Noelle MacGregor at  [email protected].
On Sunday, April 21st, Energy's Inventeam and juniors from the Bazinga cohort exhibited their projects at the
Galveston Bay Foundation Bay Day Festival at the Kemah Boardwalk. Bay Day is a one-day celebration presented by the Galveston Bay Foundation and numerous community partners. It is a fun event for families and adults that annually welcomes more than  5,000 attendees to experience and learn more about Galveston Bay, the largest bay in Texas and one of the most productive estuaries in the country! Festival highlights include bay-themed arts and crafts, live animal demonstrations, touch tanks, a scavenger hunt, science and marine exhibits, live music, and more. Children and adults had an opportunity learn about the importance of Galveston Bay in our everyday lives at exhibitor booths, including Baytown Nature Center, Houston Zoo, Sea Center Texas, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and much more.  At the event, Bazinga juniors exhibited the final stage of their four-phase year-long project of becoming an environmental literate. At Bay Day, attendees were able to interact with activities that displayed the work such as a healthy vs unhealthy estuary, how biodiesel is made, and how we can take action to better our environment. In addition, Energy's InvenTeam exhibited their progress on their heating system that prevents biodiesel from gelling up in colder climates. The use of their invention provides a pragmatic way to implement a cleaner transportation system that encourages the use of green energy. Overall, both groups had a successful exhibition!

On Wednesday, April 18th, freshmen from the Lightning Volts cohort went to the
Miller Outdoor Theater and visited the Japanese Gardens . At the Japanese Gardens, students did a scavenger hunt to look for different plants as an introduction activity to plant systems. At the Miller Outdoor Theater, students watched "Moving Myths", an interactive performance by the METdance group who aim to captivate and entertain audiences through dance. Their performance portrayed traveling dancers who gathered around a campfire and told a variety of international legends and myths that represented different cultures and universal lessons. Students even got to dance with performers in the audience. The students were inspired by these stories for the book they will be creating this term. They have been tasked with writing a myth pop-up book and creating a biological timeline about a certain species. Finally, students will also research a continent and compare its human population to the species population to develop a geographical timeline.

For the past few weeks, the freshman students from the AC/DC cohort have been working on a mini PBL project for Biology, Geography, English and IED class. The students were faced with different driving questions. For instance, In English, students are investigating strengths and weaknesses of the public-school system; they will be submitting their original ideas for improvement to The Rather Prize. During this process, the students were given a list of books to choose and read from. The students have been reading at least 2 chapters a week and submitting a summary. While In Biology, the students were tasked with looking at identity as a whole to see how our genetic determines our traits and personalities.  In Geography, they were charged with predicting migration patterns for the world by analyzing the past and identifying push and pull factors. Finally, In IED, they are preparing to launch a project that will include design & build.
This week, we would like to shine a spotlight on Energy junior, Derrick Ngo. After the five-month-long, three-round application process, Derrick has recently received word of his acceptance into the prestigious Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA) . With the mission of supporting students who come from low-income backgrounds as they enter the nation's top colleges, LEDA is a six-year program that will assist Derrick in applying and entering college. He is the first student at Energy to be accepted into this highly-selective program, which has an 8% acceptance rate. Through LEDA, he will attend the Aspects of Leadership Summer Institute, a rigorous seven-week college preparation program at Princeton University. There, Derrick will receive college guidance from mentors and counselors to strengthen his writing and test-taking skills in preparation for his college applications. In addition to Derrick's recent acceptance into the LEDA Scholars Program, he is also a NASA High School Aerospace Scholar , member of EMERGE , and the current president and founder of Energy's "Chem Club". Although it was hard for him to choose when prompted, Derrick said that English is currently his favorite subject because his teacher consistently challenges him. During his free time, he enjoys volunteering at the Houston Food Bank as a Student Hero.
Words of Wisdom:
"It may not all work out in the end, but some things do."

Congratulations to our very own Dr. Gibson who won Teacher of the Year Award by the Houston Geological Society. This award has been established to honor individuals whose extraordinary efforts or unique contributions are in earth science education. Dr. Gibson will be acknowledged and celebrated at the President's Night dinner on June 23rd. Congratulations once again on receiving this award from HGS. It is well deserved!
