A Note from the Scout Executive:
It is with sincere regret that I must announce the resignation of Wally Lester as the Ranger and Facilities Director for the Anthony Wayne Area Council, Camp Chief Little Turtle and all of the Anthony Wayne Scout Reservation. Wally’s departure will be on April 15 th . Wally has been a passionate and dedicated member of the council team for over 9 years. In addition to keeping the camp facilities in great condition, he has served as Summer Camp Director, has actively promoted our year-round and summer camp programs throughout Indiana and has played a key role in both new program development as well as delivery.

The entire Anthony Wayne Area Council wishes him and his family the best of luck as he moves on to become the Associate Director of Outdoor Adventure with the National High Adventure Base, Summit Bechtel Reserve. This is a great opportunity for Wally’s talents to be shared with Scouts and Scouters from across the country.

Given the current crisis and social distancing restrictions we will not be able to have a gathering to wish Wally well. However if you wish, he can always be reached through email at Wally.Lester@Scouting.org .

We will begin search process for a new camp ranger in the upcoming weeks.

Scout Story
Allen is a Scout from Troop 978. He wanted to do his part to help healthcare workers amid the COVID-19 Pandemic. He has created straps out of paracord and buttons for healthcare workers to hook their masks on.

When asked why he wanted to help, Allen responded, "The reason I decided to the make mask string holder is that healthcare workers do enough for us and they need help now more than ever during this COVID-19 Pandemic. It just seems right to help out in some way."

Allen has made these holders in a variety of colors. He plans to deliver them soon.
Thank you for doing your part, Allen!

The Wood Badge experience is training for adult leaders from all scouting programs. It provides participants with firsthand knowledge regarding how teams develop and achieve excellence. Participants take part in an active learning process through involvement in planning, development, presentation and assessment. Participants will enjoy a world-class learning experience  that will strengthen their long-term commitment to Scouting and provide them with valuable leadership skills. Wood Badge is a series of fun and educational weekend training activities that develop you into a better Scout leader. There is some physical  challenge involved, but nothing that should keep anyone from attending this great opportunity. The time constraints are tight,  but only because we jam so many great training activities into the weekends.

You can find more information about this Wood Badge course, Applications and AWAC Wood Badge scholarships at awac.org/woodbadge

Wabash Valley
Greetings Wabash Valley Scout Leaders,

I’ve been in contact with some of you in the past two weeks and am glad you are all doing well. Last Thursday, April 2, Wabash Valley District held it’s very first virtual Roundtable Meeting. Fifteen of you logged in to join the meeting. It was good to see your faces and find out what has been going on in your new world. While most units are adhering to their policy of “No School, No Scouts”, there are a couple of units who have been having virtual meetings over Zoom or some other web platform to stay connected with their scouts. Steve Drinkut emailed several lists of Merit Badges that can be earned while at home. If you didn’t receive Steve’s email, let me know and I’ll forward it to you. Troop 130 in Huntington has held a couple of organized bike rides on the trails around Huntington…just to get outdoors and keep scouts active. They practiced all the “Social Distancing” requirements while riding and had hand sanitizer on hand…No Pun Intended : ). The scouts enjoyed seeing their fellow scouts and being able to get outdoors. After the roundtable meeting other leaders expressed interest in exploring doing virtual meetings with their unit. If you have questions about How to do a virtual meeting let me know and I’ll get you in touch with those who can help. There was discussion about scouts being able to get outside for a hike around the neighborhood or out in the woods. It’s OK to do outdoor activities as long as Social Distancing is maintained.

I know I’ve advocated that Cub Scout Pack and Den Leaders stay connected with their scout families and encourage parents to work on Cub Scout Achievements and Electives with their child while they are at home. They could do this on days when there is no e-learning required. It’s something to fill time and give kids something constructive to do. The scouts can still earn and receive their belt loops and rank patches this Spring. I recommend that one person in each unit gather the den advancement lists and create one unit list and email it to  Mary.Hardy@scouting.org . Please copy  steven.higgins@scouting.org  when you email Mary as she isn’t able to get emails at home. The plan is for Mary to go into the scout shop one, maybe two, days a week and fill orders and mail them to you. Scoutbook lists can also be submitted electronically. Please include an Advancement report if you're not using Scoutbook…along with a payment source…e.g. credit card, unit account, check in the mail. Also, give Mary a mailing address for her to send your package to. Contact me if you have any questions about how to acquire awards. Scouts BSA Troops can follow the same procedure to acquire awards!!!

At this time, with the Stay At Home Order extended until mid-April and not knowing when it will be lifted, Spring Camporee will be postponed until Fall Camporee…Hopefully. Day Camps, Scouts BSA and Cub Scout Residents camps are still being planned to happen. Contact me if you have any questions.

In this unprecedented time, I pray that everyone stays well, keeps abreast of what state and local health officials are saying and Turn OFF the News on TV and Radio. Stay Positive. Do Something BOLD. We WILL get through all this Together. Please reach out to me if you need anything!!!

Stay Safe and Well : ) Yours in Scouting…
