Fruit trees in local reserves

City of Marion is planning it's first citrus/nut tree orchard in a Parkholme reserve. Let us know what you think about this!

Other planned works include more trees, minor landscaping, removal of a playground and retaining existing pathways, seating and trees.

The playground equipment at this reserve has reached the end of its life expectancy and will be removed. A new playground will be constructed nearby at Hendrie Street Reserve Inclusive Playground.

Your feedback is so important in helping shape our reserves.

Comment about the things you like and tell us why .....and talk about what could be improved and why that would make things better.

Hop on the Making Marion website to view the fruit tree orchard plans and take 1 minute to tell us what you think.

 Our people, our stories

When many people make small changes, together we make a big difference.

Our community is interested in living a sustainable lifestyle to create healthier lives and enhance our wellbeing.

These are the stories of people who are making small changes.
Hear their voice and join our story about sustainability.

Our first story is from David Mitchell - a regular Common Thread attendee and now OzHarvest volunteer.

'About a year ago I attended a Common Thread film evening and watched a film about food wastage. It was entertaining and an eye-opener for me about how much waste really happens. A chap from OzHarvest then gave a talk about the work they do rescuing food.

At the time I was retired and thinking about doing volunteer work. I wanted to do something physical to keep fit and useful at the same time and this seemed an ideal fit. So I joined and have been driving an OzHarvest van on a Sunday for six months now. I have a team of volunteers who help load up at the Wayville farmers market and unload it at shelters for the homeless in the city. The volunteers are great to work with as are the staff at the shelters. It's been a really rewarding experience.'

 Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot

Remember the time when it was over 35 degrees for a whole two weeks? And the temperature at night didn't drop below 26 degrees for most of that!

You must have missed the Heatwave Hypothetical event at Marion Cultural Centre in February 2018.

BUT you can catch this award-winning event on You Tube.

Be inspired by the stories of collaboration amongst organisations and the generosity of the human spirit to support others in hard times.

 Kaurna Seasons

The mornings are cold with kudmu (fog/dew) on the ground and it's time to net mullet in the shallows at high tide. This is the season of Parnati (Autumn).

In 2002 the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, in conjunction with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) and Monash University's Centre for Indigenous Studies, launched the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website  as a formal recognition of the intricate understanding of the environment that has been developed and passed down through countless generations by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over many thousands of years.

The website includes seasonal calendars from a number of indigenous communities throughout Australian, including one for the local Kaurna seasons .

Kaurna seasons align fairly closely to the familiar seasons of summer, winter, autumn and spring, but changes in the seasons are indicated by astronomical, biological and climatic indicators rather than simply by a particular date.

On the website you can download a graphic calendar showing the seasons, as well as a PDF containing more detailed text descriptions for the indicators and traditional cultural activities or lifestyle events for the seasons.

Visit the website now to discover what's likely to be in store for us throughout Parnati .

Westfield Local Heroes

Who in your community deserves to be recognised and celebrated?

Westfield Local Heroes is a new community recognition and grants program, connecting and enriching communities.
Individuals are nominated and voted for by their communities, with three finalists per Westfield Living centre each awarded a $10,000 grant to support their affiliated organisation's work, programs or activities.

Westfield Local Heroes discovers and celebrates individuals who promote social wellbeing and/or harmony in our communities through their work, programs or activities, across one or more of the three social values of Family, Youth Opportunity and Inclusion.
The program is open to staff, volunteers, members or agents of organisations in all sectors including business, government, education, sports, welfare, community and not-for-profit. The nominee's work must occur within, and benefit the community of, the local area of a Westfield centre.
