Knee replacement by the numbers

A dramatic increase in aging Americans and an ever more demanding younger population who are unwilling to live with debilitating knee pain are combining to drive up the demand for knee replacement surgery. It is estimated that over 700,000 total knee replacements are done across the US each year and half of those are done for patients under 65 years old. A few more facts* to consider:
  • By 2030, total knee replacement surgeries are projected to grow 673% to 3.5 million procedures per year.
  • About 60% of all knee replacement operations are performed on women.
  • Approximately 85% of knee replacements will last for 20 years.
  • Nearly 1/2 of American adults will develop knee osteoarthritis in at least one knee in their lifetime.
  • 80% of osteoarthritis patients have some degree of movement limitation.
  • More than 90% of people who have knee replacement surgery experience a dramatic reduction in knee pain.
It is that last fact you should focus on - relief from knee pain is possible! We have several award-winning surgeons on staff who are specialists in treating problems of the knee.

Our fit, healthy younger patients who choose to have knee replacement surgery performed as an outpatient will typically find that the postoperative pain is tolerable and they are able to ambulate well enough after surgery to allow them to go home immediately after surgery and to function at home with relative independence. Most patients will be able to begin outpatient physical therapy sessions within a week following surgery.

Total knee replacement is not for everyone!

Not every patient with knee osteoarthritis needs a total knee replacement. For some patients, replacing only part of the knee joint is the solution to their pain. This procedure is called "partial" or "unicompartmental" knee replacement and is now a popular and scientifically supported method of resolving the arthritic pain of the knee, preserving much of the structural integrity of the remaining knee. With partial knee replacement, only the damaged area of the knee joint is replaced, which may help to minimize trauma to healthy bone and tissue making partial knee replacement less invasive than traditional total knee replacement surgery.

However, partial knee replacement can be a challenging procedure to perform accurately on a consistent basis using manual techniques. To answer this challenge, Stryker has developed the
Mako® Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System . Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery is the most consistently reproducible, precision joint replacement installation system available in the world today that allows certified surgeons to optimize knee implant sizing, tracking, and ligament balance enhancing implant function and longevity.

We offer partial knee replacement at Seaside using the Mako system. Call us today at 239.592.4955 for an appointment to discuss your options.
