      M a j o r   A n n o u n c e m e n t !
Excited to be writing you all today to inform you of some enhancements to the Parent and Family Programs office and the Owl Parent Association. My name is Dr. Katie Burke and I am the director of New Student Orientation, Transfer Student Services, and Family Engagement.  Writing you in concert with my colleague Allison Hackett, assistant director for Admissions Events and Family Connections.

We wanted to reach out to (re)introduce ourselves and update you regarding transitions and changes in our areas. To elaborate on this change, Family Connections is the Recruitment and Admissions component. We are finding more of our students have family members(parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, legal guardians,etc.. )  who are interested in learning out more about the institution and developing an initial relationship. This is where Allison's role comes in. Family Engagement is now the entity on campus to deepen the partnership with our families for student success and involve them in programs, such as Parent and Family Weekend.

The Owl Parent Association has served an incredible purpose and is now being re-envisioned to the new Family Advisory Board which is being introduced to advocate for family concerns and serve as a sounding board to inform FAU on how we best support families and our students.

We will be distributing the Owl Family Newsletter once a month and eager for your feedback which we request below.

All the best,
Katie G. Burke, Ph.D.

University Advising Services (UAS) helps your student develop and implement an academic plan for success at FAU.  Our advising program is based on the Appreciative Advising model, which is the intentional practice of asking positive, open-ended questions that help students optimize their educational experience and achieve their DREAMS, DESIGN a plan to achieve those dreams, and make necessary changes to ACHIEVE their goals.  The advisee and advisor are partners, and below are a few tips on how you can be an APPRECIATIVE PARTNER with your FAU student.
