We Can Help With School Summer Reading!

Now, more than ever, Middleborough middle- and high-school students have greater freedom to read what they want for their summer reading assignments.  Nichols Middle School sixth and seventh grade students have the option to choose from a menu of activities that includes reading, while eighth graders can pick any fiction and nonfiction book appropriate for their reading level.  MHS students in grades 9-11 can read a title from a select list or opt to read one of their own choosing as long as it applies to the chosen theme for the grade in which they are entering.

With many, this freedom of choice can sometimes be overwhelming. Where do you start?  What should you read?  That's where we can help.  The Library staff can assist you in finding a book that both interests you and fulfills your school reading assignment.  Stop in and ask us for assistance any time!  You can also grab a suggested reading list at the Library to get you started or try  Novelist, a free online resource that provides readers book reviews and read-alike recommendations by age, subject, and genre.

You can find the school's recommended titles from the  Middleborough High School Summer Reading List for grades 9-11 on a white shelf in the Teen Area. We have books in both print and audio book format.  If you don't see a title you're looking for, ask a staff member at the Main Desk.  We'd be glad to reserve a copy for you.

If you prefer to read a book on your mobile device or eReader, download a summer reading title using our free OverDrive service.  Most of the reading list titles--as well as many popular teen books--are available as eBooks and downloadable audio books.  You can use OverDrive online 24/7 by clicking on the link located on the right-hand side of our website at  www.midlib.org.

SAILS is Going Mobile

We're excited to announce the availability of the  SAILS  Mobile  app in the Google Play and Apple stores! Download it today and experiment with all of the great features it offers. You can:

* Manage your account: Keep track of your account - view your checked-out items, holds, fines, and account information.

* Search by barcode: Use your device's camera to scan the barcode on a book, CD, DVD, or other items when you're away from the Library and search for available copies in the SAILS Network.

* L ink accounts to manage your family's checkouts and holds, all in the same place.

You can find it here in the  App Store for your Apple device, or those with iTunes and iOS.

Android users and those who use Google Play can look  here.

Let us know what you think about the new app.  Need a little extra help? Set up a tutorial with our head of information systems Jace Ewing, by emailing jewing@sailsinc.org, or calling 508/946-2470.

Did You Know...

...you can make suggestions to our adult services  librarian, Libby Fox, or our young adult collection librarian, Chris Dargelis, for everything from a new book, DVD or CD you'd like to see purchased for the collections to an author or performer you'd like to have appear at the Library?

We can't promise we'll buy every book you suggest or book every author, but we'd love to hear your ideas! You can stop by the Library to speak with them in person, call 508/946-2470, or email them with your suggestions at lfox@sailsinc.org (adults) or cdargeli@sailsinc.org (teens).

This Month's Marvelous Museum Pass

Zoo New England's mission is to inspire people to protect and sustain the natural world for future generations by creating fun and engaging experiences that integrate wildlife and conservation programs, research, and education.

Franklin Park Zoo is a 72-acre site nestled in Boston's historic Franklin Park, long considered the "crown jewel" of Frederick Law Olmsted's Emerald Necklace Park System. Be sure to check out the  all-new Children's Zoo where your family will discover, explore and play side-by-side with animals.

Stone Zoo, formerly known as the Middlesex Fells Zoo, is located on a 26-acre site near the sparkling Spot Pond reservoir in Stoneham. You can visit more than 80 different animals, ranging from Snow Leopards and Black-Handed Spider Monkeys to Gila Monsters and Kookaburras.

The pass is good for admission to either Franklin Park Zoo or Stone Zoo, and admits  six people at $9 per adult and $6 per child.

Please remember you may pick up your pass any time during the three days before your visit, and this pass does not need to be returned to the Library.

Thanks to the Friends of the Middleborough Library for providing the financial support for the Zoo New England pass, and many other passes. Check out our entire collection of passes  here.
