In Sunday School this year the children and youth focused on learning the books of the Hebrew Scriptures. This year's Youth Sunday is a walk through those scriptures. Early in the year, the students chose the characters they wanted to represent. In the early winter months, we gathered together regularly to create puppet characters as well as all of the animals and scene design. The children also spent time relating their versions of the Bible stories and delving deeper into the meaning behind these stories and how it relates to their lives today. The scriptural narrative that results is taken directly from the thoughts and concerns shared by our children and youth. The telling of the biblical stories, the litanies, and prayers, the theological arch of the service all express the profound wisdom of our young members. We hope you are moved by today's offering.

Pray for those affected by gun violence 
Since a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, killing 26 people, 20 of them children;
952 people in Cuyahoga County have been killed by guns. Since last month, 14 more individuals have died by gun violence in Cuyahoga County. The names of those at least 18 years of age are: Jonathan Benitez Manchuca, Michael G. Shurn, William Patrick Nyhan, Ashtin Williams, Andrew P. Hudgins, Holly Marita Watkins, Robert J. Pierce, O'Shay Shackeyia Miller, Deante Levon Stevenson, David Joseph Churnega, Benny Cromity Jr., Joseph Edward Tittl Jr., Lorenzo Moore. Five of those who died were by suicide, and one victim was under eighteen.

Believing God calls us to be peacemakers, by Session action, each month we pray for people affected by gun violence and to reduce the evil of gun violence in our nation, marked by the tolling of the tower bell. The Church of the Covenant partners with God Before Guns, a multi-faith coalition of individuals and faith communities created in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, to reduce gun violence. Nicole Murray was born and raised in Cleveland and has been living in University Circle since 1999. Nicole has attended Church of the Covenant on and off for the last few years. She says what drew her to the church and why she has decided to join at this time is because the Covenant is a place that welcomed her and made her feel like a part of the community from the very first time she came through the doors.

Outreach Opportunities
Airport Rides for College Students - Can you help?
The end of the academic year is fast approaching! Covenant Student Ministries is looking to create a team of volunteer drivers to take students to the airport to catch flights home for the summer. This program will run from April 30th to May 21st. CWRU, CIM, and CIA students will be able to request rides and we will match them with available drivers. Are you willing to give up an hour or so of your time to pick someone up from the Church parking lot and take them to Cleveland Hopkins Airport? Our Bread for the World Offering of Letters is on Sunday, May 13th.
Come to the Library after the worship service (on
May 13th
) to write letters expressing your opinion to Congress concerning the 2019 budget and spending bills to protect key programs that will reduce hunger and poverty. More than 800 million men, women, and children in our world, including nearly 50 million people in the United States, are living at risk of hunger. Overseas, as many as 20 million people are on the brink of starvation in Ethiopia, Kenya, and other parts of Africa that are suffering from the worst famine and drought in half a century. Seeking Volunteer Help with the Sanctuary Sound System
We are grateful for your patience in worship as our sound system is repaired. In the meantime, we are seeking additional volunteers to help run the system during worship and other occasional events in the sanctuary. Although some experience with audio equipment would be helpful, we will also offer training on the system. Please contact Amy Starr Redwine if you are willing to assist with this vital ministry that makes our worship accessible to all.
All Kinds of Volunteer Opportunities for Covenant's 2018 Parade the Circle Entries!
At noon sharp on Saturday, June 9th, the Church of the Covenant's newly-restored "Cragin Peal of Three Bells" will formally kick off the 29th annual Parade the Circle celebration! This fitting Parade the Circle honor coincides with the 50th anniversary weekend of our church's 47-bell McGaffin Carillon for which the non-profit, Friends of the McGaffin Carillon, has been overseeing its restoration. The opening parade peal is just the first of many ways through which we will be celebrating our carillon's anniversary weekend. In addition to starting the parade off with a clang, the Church of the Covenant will once again have an entry in the Parade the Circle parade after a several year absences! Our bell-themed entry, entitled "Bats in the Belfry," will celebrate both sound and movement. To make it a ringing success, we are not only looking for 47 "bats" of all ages to march IN the parade but also for a half dozen or so artisans and craft persons who can help with the design and construction of our church tower float entry. YES, WE ARE HAVING A FLOAT ENTRY!!! And if none of the above rings your chimes, we still have one more Parade the Circle opportunity for you. Working as a volunteer at our craft tent on Wade Oval where you will assist children to decorate a bookmark, die-cut in the shape of our bell tower and containing information on the carillon and an invitation to visit with us any Sunday to hear the carillon in person, on the back. From 12 - 18 volunteers are needed in three and a half-hour shifts, some to staff the craft activity and some to be available to talk about the carillon and the Church of the Covenant generally.
To round out the weekend, on Sunday, June 10th we will rededicate the Cragin Peal during Service and then host a meet and greet with the grandchildren of our carillon's namesake, Rev. Alexander McGaffin: Betsy Ferries from Vermont, Susan Ferries Moore from Virginia and Judy Smith from Utah following Service.

 Fifty years ago this spring, the bells of our carillon were hoisted into the 140-foot-high tower named for a beloved founding pastor of our congregation.
The 50

Birthday Year kick-off is June 8-10, with our usual Friday Lunchtime Concert and a full day of Parade the Circle Celebration events on Saturday headlined by the newly restored Cragin Peal ringing for the first time to start the Parade.
On Sunday, meet the carillon namesake and donor's grandchildren traveling from as far away as Utah at post-worship fellowship and enjoy a pre-concert talk, a special concert, and reception that afternoon.

Member Spotlight
Twenty-three church members helped to spruce up the church grounds on Sunday, May 6
th
, after the annual meeting. It took about 1.5 hours to do the work. Projects completed were the removal of fountain grass and weeding of the Sonia Golden garden, raking of leaves around the education wing, removal of a dead shrub in front of the church, raking of leaves along the sidewalk to Hillel and weeding of one of the traffic islands. Volunteers included: Nick Tomko, Ryan & Ron Szafraniec, Cathy Luck, Bill Braun, Nancy Smekal, Mary Ann Bromelmeier, Tom Denbow, Bob & Karen Ault, Ann deConingh, Melanie Marsh Baum, Ken Jones and Susanne Carter, Nicole Murray, Frank Repasi, Maureen Gesing, Dick Miller, Ken Rock, Susan and Will Klein, Amy Starr Redwine, and Patty Fowler.
