WORSHIP SERVICE AT THE LANCASHIRE BUILDING
July 14th through September 1st
|
|
SUNDAY July 14 through September 1
Worship Services will be held at the Lancashire Rd building (2728 Lancashire Rd, Cleveland Heights) which has air conditioning! There is also a stair lift, but no elevator.
Parking at the building is limited, but there is a lot of street parking, as well as a few nearby city lots. In case you need them, bring quarters for parking in the city lots which are on both sides of the Lancashire building.
The Lancashire building has a stair lift for those are not able to climb stairs alone. It does require that you are able to get into and out of a seated position (with assistance).
While we're celebrating in a smaller space, please remember to place your purses, bags and other belongings on the floor to free up seats for others.
We'll return to the sanctuary in Shaker on September 7th for the big Reunification Service and the Water Communion on September 8th.

A Big THANK YOU to All for Our Revitalized Playground!
On Saturday, July 27th, a team of worker bees from our congregation and our neighborhood put the finishing touches on our updated playground.
This project was started by a group of neighborhood kids who enjoyed playing on our equipment, but were getting splinters and be stings. They asked if we would make the space safer for them and we gave a resounding YES!
You've given generously of our time, talent, and treasure to create a fun, inviting space for young people. Through a crowdfunding campaign with IOBY, you gave $4,409 for supplies. You showed up for work days to pull down the old equipment and put up the new.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
We have to give a special shout out to Leila, Jackson, Jaryn, Arlo, Rachel, Jonah, Devin, and Alexa and their parents, Staci, Lindsay, and Laura for first proposing this project almost a year ago; to Nancy King Smith, Dell Salza and Ray Gonzalez, who were the leaders of this project; the Arrington, Burkel, and Ogbuji families for their input in planning; and Dawn Arrington and IOBY for the fundraising; and all who showed up for work days.
It is amazing what we can do when we do it together.

Religious Education This Summer!
Our religious education programs tend to take a Summer break as the congregation comes and goes during the warm season. However, we’re going to have a few opportunities to engage our minds and our spirits this Summer! At the same time, please be in touch with me if you have other ideas for how to learn and explore this Summer!
A Chance to Chat while Beverage and Banter Is on Hiatus for July!
Rev. Joe and Allan will not be meeting in the community this month because of Rev. Joe’s WELL-DESERVED vacation.
But Allan finds it difficult to shut up, and certainly not for a whole month. So, he’s asked Mark Weber to meet with him on Sunday mornings to chat informally about important and/or big topics. As with beverage and banter, EVERYONE is welcome to sit and chat, joining that ongoing and never-really-ending conversation that occupies the curious. We’ll gather at 10AM around some tables in the fellowship hall. Feel free to bring coffee or tea and we’ll hope to have coffee available as well.
Beverages and Banter returns on Thursday, August 8th!
Meet us at the University Circle Panera Bread (
11490 Euclid Ave, Cleveland
) from 7:00 - 9:00 pm for some unstructured conversations about life, spirituality, and more.

UUMFE Ministry for Earth
"Connecting and inspiring an active community of UUs for environmental justice, spiritual renewal, and shared reverence for our Earth home.”
If this calls to you, please join us at our next meeting and learn how you can become involved with the Ministry for Earth. We are a group of individuals working in many “In my own back yard projects” making the world better one step at a time. Join us! We teach kids to grow food, protect pollinators, read about and learn how to garden, promote 100% renewable electricity, and create community through concern and reverence for all life.
Our next meeting on Sunday 9/8/19 at 12:30 in the Baker Room. We will gather and talk about our projects, report progress and seek help if needed.
Recycling Changes:
Recycling is changing across the country. The rules are not simple, it is not about numbers, it is about markets. At the church we can no longer recycle #5 plastic and alkaline batteries. There is no market for these items. Cuyahoga County Solid Wste District offers the link below to help you find out if you can recycle an item and how to recycle that item. Check it out
Our Church Playground has ben fixed up!
Check it out! This is a collaborative project between UUCC, our neighbors and members of Fairmont Temple.

Ohioans for Gun Safety (OFGS)
Over the last five years, deaths due to firearms have increased by more than 35%. Ohioans for Gun Safety (OFGS) is a grass-roots, citizen’s organization committed to changing this tragic situation.
Beginning in August, 2019, citizens representing OFGS will be circulating petitions among Ohio voters to place a proposal on the Ohio ballot for 2020 that would close most of the loopholes in regarding background checks and, for the first time, would mandate background checks for firearms purchased at gun shows across Ohio.
OFGS needs our help. If you have the time, please consider circulating a petition.

Adopt-a-Potluck
Groups are needed to adopt Potlucks. What does that mean? If you would like to use the Potluck event for a presentation or discussion with the congregation, please send a note to
potluck@uucleveland.org
to get it on the calendar. Groups that adopt a Potluck will need to recruit volunteers to staff the meal--the volunteers do NOT need to be limited to group members.

SECOND TUESDAY BOOK CLUB
AUGUST 13, 2019
The Second Tuesday Book Club is skipping July and our next meeting is August 13. We will be reading
Factfulness by Hans Rosling
. It has ten reasons we are wrong about the world and why things are better than you think. It is a hopeful book about the potential for human progress when we work off facts rather than our inherent biases. This is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world. We will be meeting in the Library at the Lancashire Building at 7:00 pm.

It’s summer at UUCC and the Welcome Office needs you!
Everybody seems to like to take a little break in the summer - even our office volunteers! With that we need some substitutes in the Welcome Office. You can help out as little as a single 2-hour shift to as much as a day each week. The work is easy – mostly answering the phone, helping out visitors, and making the occasional copy. We have a handy reference guide so even if you feel like you don’t know everything you can still be useful. It’s easy work, but extremely valuable – callers really appreciate having a person answer their call!
