Spotlight on Villanova University's Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest
Villanova University's Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest has created a resource called, "6 Steps To Historical Literacy." When readers find historical information, a historical statement, or a reference to historical fact in any online media, they encourage them to ask themselves these questions above and think critically about the information they encounter. Director,
Jason Steinhauer, says " We are consuming incredible amounts of media, and a significant percentage of its contents are historical in nature. That has an effect on what we know about the past, what we believe to be true, and how we study history. Historians have an obligation to be a part of these conversations on media literacy..." Survey on Media and Information Literacy with Youth Perspectives
The
CMIL
is pleased to announce the release of a new publication,
"Survey on Media and Information Literacy with Youth Perspectives"
co-authored by CMIL Director, Sherri Hope Culver and Alton Grizzle, Program Specialist for Media and Information Literacy, UNESCO. This publication is part of the UNESCO book series on Internet freedom. This report combines research findings from two related research studies carried out for UNESCO. The first is research into youth perspectives on privacy through a survey designed as part of a larger study on citizens' response to MIL competencies, which started in 2015. The second is a survey on privacy in MIL programmes globally conducted through the UNESCO-UNAOC UNITWIN Cooperation Program on MIL and Intercultural Dialogue (MLID University Network). Journal of Media Literacy Education. Book reviews help people make good decisions about what to read and use. NAMLE members can add a book to the list, volunteer to write a review, or just
take a look at the amazing titles.

just launched a video, tipsheet and web section on finding and verifying information on health and science topics. Two of the most important kinds of information we look for online are about health and science. These can have a big effect on decisions we make about our own lives and our opinions on controversial issues. The News Literacy Project
offers limited on-site professional development workshops for educators, as well as an online series twice a year. Their current topics include: an overview and rationale for the field of news literacy, a survey of the misinformation landscape, news literacy as a means of encouraging 21st-century civic engagement, and a hands-on introduction to using digital forensics in the classroom. Youth Media Literacy Education
Programs
Media Power Youth
provides youth media literacy education programs.
Bring a media literacy workshop to your school or community and empower kids to make safe, healthy choices through smart use of media. They can customize a workshop based on your needs and audience. Youth learn the basics of media literacy and apply their skills to a specific health topic (i.e. violence, bullying, alcohol, tobacco, vaping, healthy eating, body image, self esteem, depression). Students will also delve into critical health-focused media literacy skills and then apply their learning to create their own productions, often a Public Service Announcement (PSA). All aspects of pre-production, production and post production are included, empowering participants to be both critical media consumers and positive message makers. Digital Leadership Training for Students

provides interactive programs focused on social media issues tailored specifically to elementary school, middle school and high school students. They also provide multi-school Digital Leadership Training to equip students with everything they need to take steps against negativity online. Workshops for parents are also available. Curriculum Developer, drew upon his expertise (as a a sustainability educator, as well as his experience working with men who had been convicted of domestic abuse) to identify key structures and approaches for creating safe and respectful dialog about "hot button" topics in the classroom.
The course begins October 16, 2018. Enrollment is open now so educators can secure PD funding and credit. Due to the highly interactive nature of the course, registration is capped at 25 participants.
