GOHi to resume monthly global webinar series
|
Occurring on the second Thursday of every month effective August 16, from 9 - 10 a.m. EDT, the objective of this series is to feature the research of GOHi affiliated faculty, visiting scholars, staff, fellows and students. Currently, speakers are being recruited for this monthly series. Topics considered include completed research, works in progress, ideas for projects that require international partners to apply for funding and research plans for dissertation projects.

One Health Leadership and Management Training held in Nairobi, Kenya

Professors Michael Bisesi (The Ohio State University) and William Ogara (University of Nairobi) led a
One Health Leadership Workshop, held in Nairobi, Kenya from June 25 - 26.
The workshop focused on an introduction to leadership and communication using a "One Health" model for professionals in relevant health fields, including both academia and government positions.

GOHi presents at the Global Health Summit in Denver, Colorado
|
Mostafa Ghanem (GOHi's Laboratory Manager) recently attended the Global Health Summit during the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Annual Convention on mitigating the impact of antimicrobial resistance worldwide at the Colorado Convention Center.
Speakers at the summit represented government institutions (e.g. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and United States Department of Agriculture), international organizations (e.g. World Health Organization, Pan American Health Organization) and nonprofits (e.g. the Pew Charitable Trust and AVMA committee on antimicrobials).
During a panel discussion, Ghanem presented GOHi as a success model for global partnerships and bridging the gap between low/middle income nations and high income nations, where institutions, faculty, staff and students from both sides can work together on global issues like antimicrobial resistance, while also building capacity. The meeting was organized by the public health and outreach committee of the AVMA.

Ongoing efforts, including a targeted master training of trainers on Clinical Specimen Collection in Bishoftu, Ethiopia this month, demonstrate GOHi's strong and ongoing commitment to address AMR globally.

Rabies mass vaccination efforts continue in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
|
In June, GOHi's rabies project coordinator, Ashagre Kebede (third from right), coordinated a rabies mass vaccination effort in three sub-cities in Addis Ababa over three weeks. Mr. Kebede reported that 1,603 animals were vaccinated in an effort coordinated with partners at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Ethiopia.
This activity represents the ongoing commitment of GOHi through a multiyear cooperative agreement with the CDC to increase surveillance and prevention of rabies in Ethiopia.

GOHi Executive Body member, Michael Bisesi, PhD, featured in The New York Times
|
On July 20 Bisesi, senior associate dean, director of academic affairs and professor, College of Public Health at The Ohio State University, was quoted as an environmental and occupational health science expert after a steam pipe explosion occurred in Manhattan's Flatiron district on July 19. Bisesi provided insights on the presence of asbestos, a natural material that was commonly used as an insulating and fireproofing agent on thermal pipes beneath Manhattan until the 1970s, when it was linked to cancer. A workshop funded by GOHi and other Ohio State units via the
Connect and Collaborate Grants Program pulled together central Ohio dentists and orthopedic surgeons to discuss responsible antibiotic use.
The event, coordinated by Debra Goff, Pharm.D., an infectious-disease specialist in the College of Pharmacy at The Ohio State University, is a positive step toward preventing the sometimes deadly consequences that come from unnecessarily prescribing drugs.

Get to know GOHi: Joshua Amimo
|
GOHi's Kenya Liaison and Post-Doctoral Researcher Joshua Amimo is a lecturer at the University of Nairobi (UoN) Kenya in the Department of Animal Production Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
Previously, he was research technologist on livestock breeding strategies for low input production systems operating project at International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). Joshua has been a research fellow at Biosciences of east and central Africa (BecA-ILRI) hub working on food and water borne enteric viruses in swine.
Joshua holds a
PhD in animal genetics, a Master of Science in animal genetics and breeding, and a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine.
Joshua is interested in global one health research, particularly understanding the epidemiology of viral infectious disease pathogens at the human-animal interface to aide in the development of accurate diagnostic tools and to implement appropriate control strategies. Through his years of research experience in areas of viral infectious diseases, he has grown increasingly interested in a wide variety of research areas, particularly in virology, vaccines, animal models and epidemiology.
