With our project 'Made in Foxhill', now underway, we are very much looking forward to our first event, this Saturday 12th May at St. Andrews Community Church in Foxhill, called 'Meet the Makers.'

This will be an opportunity for residents and visitors to come and meet the team, and for us to learn about what sort of arts activity the community would like in the future. There will also be opportunities to get involved in taster sessions, especially with the amazing Urban Playground.

This company are leaders in the field of parkour and urban dance and we are thrilled and very lucky to have them working on this project. They will be doing a workshop from 1-2pm and everyone is welcome to join in (although you must book here: http://www.madeinfoxhill.org/urban-playground)

Alongside Urban Playground will be Kilter asking questions as part of their amazing project, The Chronicles of Foxhill, such as: Where would you take an alien if they landed in Foxhill? What's the best place to fall in love? Where do you go if you want to bump into a friend? And Where have you laughed hardest? Olly and Caroline will then be taking people on a Walkie Talkie asking other illuminating questions as they wander through the landscape of Foxhill and the surrounding area, such as: What makes a home a home? Four walls? A landscape? Where you lay your head at night? Or just where you go to find your Mum?

As well as this, Creativity Works will be offering a taster session for our photography project, and M2AIR, an innovative artists-in-residence scheme for young people, will be looking to work with four talented young local artists to create inspiring new artworks for everyone to enjoy!

There will be much more and loads of cake! See here for more details or to book some specific events: http://www.madeinfoxhill.org/meet-the-makers

Away from Foxhill, we are busy with other up and coming festivals and events, most notably as part of Mental Health Awareness week, and as part of the Fringe Arts Bath, where again we will be taking over The Roper Gallery at Bath Artists Studios with an exhibition and our yearly free micro festival, Create Everyday. See below for highlights and more details.

This month we welcome a new member of staff, Natasha who joins us as Fresh Art@ worker. She has already fitted in very well to our small team and we very much look forward to working with her in the future.
As you can see, we always seem to have so much on, so do look out soon as we will hopefully be advertising for a new post that will be working across projects and giving all the staff here at CW much needed support.

B&NES Creative Wellbeing Courses & Groups
A new series of creative workshops aimed at supporting your wellbeing through creativity

This month we have a huge range of opportunities in the creative wellbeing programme. This year for Mental Health Awareness Week (14-20 May), we're focusing on stress. Research has shown that two thirds of us experience a mental health problem in our lifetimes, and stress is a key factor in this. By tackling stress, we can go a long way to tackle mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

We are also celebrating the Fresh Art@ project during Fringe Arts Bath. Come and see us at Bath Artists Studios between 29th May - 8th June. There'll be free creative taster sessions and the Fresh Art@ exhibition. This project promotes positive wellbeing by engaging with cultural settings and community to create fresh artwork, some of which is donated to enliven clinical NHS environments and is supported by Creativity Works, Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership Trust (AWP), The Holburne Museum, No. 1 Museum, The American Museum and Virgin Care.

Artist Profile: Luke Palmer, Artist and Director, Collaborative Painting UK

Luke Palmer - Collaborative wall painting with Graham Dews (Frome 2018)
Each month we'll be shining the spotlight on an artist that we are currently working with. This month, we've the pleasure to introduce artist Luke Palmer. G rab a cuppa and be inspired ;-)

Hello! Tell us a bit about yourself (and your artistic medium)

My name is Luke Palmer and I am an artist and arts educator from Bristol. For as long as I can remember I have enjoyed drawing and painting pictures, the bigger the better - making large drawings of trains on rolls of wallpaper as a child, painting graffiti and huge wall paintings as a teenager and more recently in gallery shows and at events and festivals. Making art that is visible and accessible for others to see remains a key theme in my work.
I love working with people. I have worked in youth education as a youth worker, mentor and lecturer in both community and mainstream settings, and have always used my passion for creativity as a way to engage and connect with people.

What project/s are you currently working on with Creativity Works?

I am currently working with a group of young people with special educational needs and disabilities at Street Library in Somerset to develop a new artwork for public display. The project has got off to a great start and brought a new energy to the space as we work in the middle of the Library on tables surrounded by books! Each of the young people taking part in the creative workshops are also undertaking work experience placements at Glastonbury and Street Libraries, so we will be drawing on their experiences to inform the works we create - watch this space for the final piece!

Who inspires you? (and why)

I am inspired by people who feel the fear and do it anyway. When people step outside their comfort zones and challenge themselves, I admire their bravery and celebrate their achievement. If we all aspired to inspire one another, it would be a wonderful thing!

What book or exhibition has inspired you recently?

Theaster Gates' 'Sanctum' project in Temple Church, Bristol (2015) was perhaps the greatest piece of art I think I have ever witnessed. An amazing intimate space created from reclaimed materials from demolition sites around Bristol and built in the ruins of 12th century Temple Church. Sanctum played host to a continuous sequence of live sound performances from local artists, 24 hours a day for 24 days. I was lucky enough to perform twice at Sanctum and was awestruck by how one artist was able to bring together and connect so many people through one piece of architectural art. It was a magical experience and I was truly sad to see it go!

What's been your biggest professional, personal or creative achievement to date?

In May 2016 I curated Tunisian Collaborative Painting in the UK at Kingsweston House for 20 professional artists from different disciplines to collaborate in groups of four for 3 hours, in complete silence, to produce five unique and unplanned artworks. The success of the event led to further Tunisian  Collaborative Painting sessions with artists at the Royal West of England Academy and UPfest.

Watch a video on the process here: Tunisian Collaborative Painting in the UK

I have recently set up Collaborative Painting UK, an arts organisation facilitating creative arts events and training that build new networks between participants, help develop communication skills, celebrate shared experience and create unimaginable, unique works of art.

What are your creative aspirations? (with or without Creativity Works)?

As well as the Street Library project and painting commissions, I am also currently working towards a major Collaborative Painting UK exhibition in early 2019 which is a really exciting opportunity - so a lot of energy is being spent on making that something you won't want to miss! I am feeling very positive about the future of the arts in the South West and want to play a part in bringing people together through creativity.

What advice would you give an emerging socially engaged artist?

I don't think that I would offer any advice - I'd be far more interested in hearing about their ideas!

Making Every Contact Count (MECC) Training

Making Every Contact Count (MECC) is about supporting people to make the most of every opportunity they have with the millions of people they come into contact with every day. Everyone who interacts with the public is able to make a difference to the health and wellbeing of the population by encouraging and supporting individuals to change  behaviours that may be damaging to their health. Telling people what to do is not the most effective way to help them change. MECC is a skills-based training opportunity that encourages a different way of working and interacting to address their health and wellbeing.

Training includes:
  • Two half day sessions where you will improve your skills and confidence in delivering very brief interventions to encourage long term behaviour change.
  • You will have the opportunity to reflect on your practice and how you can make a difference every day.
  • You must complete the MECC e-learning between the two sessions.
  • Training outcomes...
  • Improved confidence in delivering very brief interventions.
  • Better awareness of how and when to use opportunities to talk to people about their health and wellbeing.
  • Be able to use effective language to get people thinking about their choices and support a behaviour change plan.
Dates (all in Bath)
