With fewer than 100 days until priority deadline, Louisiana ranks no.2 in nation for FAFSA completion

With fewer than 100 days until the July 1 priority deadline, Louisiana ranks No.2 in the nation for the number of students completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), according to a recent report by the National College Access Network (NCAN).

"Submitting the FAFSA is an opportunity for students and parents to expand access and affordability to pursue a post-secondary education," said LOSFA Executive Director Dr. Sujuan Boutté . "By hosting events and providing line-by-line assistance, our team at LOSFA is committed to eliminating financial barriers to increase the number of students who earn degrees."

Tech gears up for annual summer camp

For more than a decade, Louisiana Tech University’s Science and Technology Education Center (SciTEC) has hosted thousands of Louisiana students in GEAR UP camps, academic learning experiences focused on post-secondary education and career planning.

In 2019, Louisiana Tech has been chosen to host six events that will bring 720 high school students to week-long camps in Ruston.

Funding for Louisiana GEAR UP is administered through the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance (LOFSA).

“Our goal is to improve equitable outcomes for Louisiana students by providing access for college success," said Dr. Tireka Cobb , LOSFA's Field Outreach Director and Louisiana GEAR UP Director.

Education leaders aim high in master plan rewrite

Louisiana’s higher education policy leaders are setting an ambitious goal for the state, striving for six in 10 working-age adults to hold a college degree or other employment credential beyond a high school diploma by 2030.

That’s a high bar in Louisiana, which consistently lags the nation in educational attainment. Fewer than half of adults aged 25 to 64 have achieved such a standard.

Online Distance Learning Program helps students meet TOPS requirements

As students begin scheduling this week, they may need to check their TOPS status, or other scholarship requirements. 

The LSU Online Distance Learning Program is promoting their online, Moodle-based courses to help keep students on track.

Manager of Digital Education, Christina Albarracin, says it is beneficial for students who need a specific course not offered during intersession. 

Course registration is available year-round, but to add credit for TOPS , students must complete the course by July 25.

Gov. Edwards proposing $19 million more for Louisiana higher education
March 20, 2019

Governor John Bel Edwards is asking lawmakers to spend $19 million more this year on higher education than was budgeted, to fill gaps in the TOPS college tuition program, help schools facing accreditation reviews and pay for boosted online resources for students.

The highest-price-tag item is $5.9 million for TOPS , which costs more for this school year than the $295 million lawmakers allocated for it.
