A Hunger for Winning
Students head to National Competition

JTED @ Mountain View Culinary Arts students Gavin Brandt, Ashlynn Cleveland, Isacc Moreno, Aaleya Rivera, and Louis Wilkinson have have spent extra hours after school working with their instructors and local chefs perfecting their skills. Their hard work paid off. They won first place at the Arizona ProStart Competition and will head off to Providence, Rhode Island this summer to compete at Nationals. This is the second year in a row that Chefs Sean Frederick and Warren Weekes have had a team capture the State's top honor and compete at Nationals.

Caterpillar gives students a test drive

Our industry partner, Caterpillar, is doing their part to help fill the shortage of skilled heavy equipment operators. The industry giant recently gave our students who are interested in our Construction and Heavy Equipment Operations programs a chance to take various pieces of heavy equipment out for a spin at their Tinaja Hills Training Center.

Caterpillar Training Coordinator Tony Torres says members of industry are willing to help anyone who has the right attitude build a career.

Physiology panel offers advice

Megan Gillespie speaks to students Megan Gillespie will graduate from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology and go to work as a Physical Therapy Technician for a year while she applies to Physical Therapy School. Her future wasn't always so clear. "I remember being a junior and senior in high school and not really knowing what it would be like after that." She says, "The future was grey, and it was kind of foggy, I didn't know where I was going."

Dr. Cindy Rankin, The Director of the UA Physiology Honors Academy and a Pima JTED Governing Board Member, invited Megan and five of her classmates to present a panel discussion to our Healthcare Foundations, Licensed Nursing Assistant, Physical Therapy Technician, and Medical Assistant students to give them a clear idea of how to succeed in college.

Healthcare Foundations student Emmely Cabieia says it was really helpful for the UA students to shine some light on what goes on in college, covering topics such as campus living, managing time, and how to work with college professors. "This experience has made me consider Physiology as a major because it's broad and you can go anywhere in the medical field from there." The Tucson High School student says she is studying to become a Licensed Nursing Assistant, and eventually wants to become a dermatologist.

Megan says she envies JTED students because they have gained more real world experience than she did. "I really wish I could have taken the Physical Therapy Technician program when I was in high school. If I had done that, it would have helped me feel more secure about my future. I'm trying to get a job doing what they are doing now."
CTE Scholarships Available
The JTED Foundation supports students and teachers

JTED gala invite
The Pima JTED Fund was started to help students   who demonstrate a financial need  purchase supplies and cover expenses that are required to complete a CTE/JTED program. The JTED Fund recently changed its name to the Pima JTED Foundation, and is being established as an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, the Foundation is offering several opportunities for students to win scholarships; for teachers to secure paid summer externships; and for graphic design students to win a cash prize for designing a new JTED Foundation logo.

Among the scholarships, Mr. Ross Potoff donated funds to award up to 23 $1,500 scholarships to students who use their cell phones to create a short video about their CTE programs. The deadline to apply for scholarships is Friday, May 4, 2018.

#RedForEd Update

Arizona's school districts are working on contingency plans for possible teacher walk-outs approved by members of Arizona Educators United #RedForEd and the Arizona Education Association. The walk-outs are scheduled to begin Thursday, April 26 to protest low funding for education in Arizona.

We are working closely with our member districts and will continuously monitor events to determine if any work stoppages will affect our leased-land campuses located on high school sites. While the majority of our member districts have stated that they do not support a work stoppage, some have informed us that they may close schools if they do not have enough staff to ensure student safety.

In the event we need to adjust our JTED class schedules due to events beyond our control, we will use all modes of communication to alert families to these changes including our parent alert system, emails, phone calls, our website, and social media. We encourage you to monitor our sites for the latest news regarding JTED programs.
