Sophie Halliday Has Joined the HAIS Team!
We are very pleased to announce that Sophie Halliday has joined HAIS as the Director of Accreditation and Licensing, after serving as Director of Educational Programs at St. Andrew’s Schools. In her fifteen years as an educator, Sophie has taught students of all ages and stages, from elementary school through college, ranging from third grade Mandarin to AP US History and Politics of Education. She has served on several HAIS self-study visiting committees and has developed and implemented self-study coordinator trainings in collaboration with HAIS. She also has served on the Hawai'i Global Issues Network Steering Committee, HAIS Leading Schools of the Future Advisory Committee, the NAIS Innovation Task Force, and she is a founding board member of 'Akahiao Nature Institute. Sophie holds a Bachelor’s Degree in both Political Science and Economics from the University of Washington and a Master’s Degree in Politics from Princeton University.

HAIS Learning Journey Exploring Makerspaces:
The goal of HAIS Learning Journeys is to improve practice through observation and reflection, while building collaboration among colleagues from HAIS member schools. Over the course of several months, participants will have the opportunity to visit makerspaces at many different schools, observing how they are being utilized and learning about how they are being integrated into student learning, in different settings. The experience is intended to give participants the opportunity to reflect on how their school’s makerspaces are being used, while connecting with other like-minded individuals.
Participants will be expected to participate in all aspects of the journey, which will include a kick-off meeting, 4-5 site visits and then a final culminating debrief meeting.

On September 1, the Late/Walk-In Ticket Pricing will take effect, and the 2-day ticket price will increase by $100 and the 1-day ticket price will increase by $50.

Join leadership teams from public, private and charter schools to strategize how to make learning visible, prioritize deeper learning outcomes for your school and identify authentic assessment practices that prioritize mastery of deeper learning outcomes for students. Local, National and International Experts will be on hand for the entire day to help guide your work.

Student presentations will be on Friday, October 4. All student presentations will take place between 12:00pm - 1:00pm, during the timeframe that was previously allocated for Like-Minded Sessions. Student proposals should address best teaching practices and should inspire thinking about learning from the student's perspective. All proposals can include up to 3 students and must include 1 teacher who will serve as an advisor and point person. Please see the Form below!

EPI 2020 Teacher Fellowship: Apply from July 1 - Sept. 1
Ecology Project International's (EPI) Teacher Fellowships are field-based, science education programs in Costa Rica, Baja, Belize, and Yellowstone. Teachers will work with conservation researchers while gaining familiarity with methods for bringing field science into the classroom. Each PD program is 8 days, and EPI funds the majority of the costs, including meals, lodging, and course activities and instruction. Formal and informal educators from any country, working with middle school to college-age students, are welcome to apply.

Creative Reuse Open House for Educators: July 20
This Saturday is the Art Explorium's annual Creative Reuse Open House for
Educators. At this event, there will be free art supplies; they will provide earth-friendly art lesson plans that teachers can take back to their classrooms; have local arts and sustainability organizations including Kokua Hawai'i Foundation, Manoa Heritage Center, and DLNR Division off Aquatic Resources.
Children of teachers who register are also welcome to come and participate in free art activities while their parents attend.

iTeach808 Conference Call for Presenters: Apply by Aug. 1
Earn $100 to lead a 1 hour tech workshop at the 10th annual iTeach808 Conference, with an opportunity to earn up to $400. They will also be offering an additional $100 travel scholarship for neighbor island presenters. Applicants will be notified by Aug. 15.

Climate Conscious Futures for the Well-Being of All: Sept. 19
This workshop is for K-12 educators who want to learn more about the changing climate and its impacts on society. A collaboration between the Hanahau‘oli School Professional Development Center and the Institute for Climate and Peace, this workshop will introduce educators to key concepts and classroom strategies to create climate-conscious and empowered students. Participants will engage in learning opportunities for teaching about climate change, learning how the concepts of climate-change and peace are inextricably linked, and will explore how pairing them helps to advance effective and inclusive processes to build peaceful and climate-conscious futures for the well-being of all.

A Commitment to Equity: Sept. 26 - 27
Children’s self-identity and behavior are influenced by biases in our diverse society. Anti-Bias Education is a social justice framework that offers early childhood educators a variety of strategies to help children learn to be proud of themselves and their families, respect a range of human differences, recognize unfairness and bias, and speak up for the rights of others. Educators will learn about teacher tools and specific curriculum ideas that counter biases related to race, ethnicity, religion, class, gender, family structures, or differing abilities. Educators will think critically about their experiences, strengthening their ability to work effectively with children and families from all backgrounds.

Immigration, Exclusion, & The American Dream: Oct. 9
This event will include an abbreviated film screening and panel discussion about the power of teaching the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act to reflect on current times. Engage with members of the Chinese Community Action Coalition, Dr. Gregory Mark and Dr. Bryan Man, who will share knowledge about the history of Chinese in Hawai'i, personal stories, and findings from their scholarship and research that link to contemporary immigration debates. Meet Hanahau'oli School JK-6 Mandarin teacher, Jingwoan Chang, and Professional Development Center Director, Dr. Amber Strong Makaiau, who will make connections to the classroom.

Philosophy for Children (P4C): Nov. 18
In this workshop, participants will learn about p4c Hawai'i from UH Uehiro Academy faculty and become part of an intellectually safe professional community of inquiry. Engage in p4c Hawai'i's hallmark activities and reflect on ways to apply the classroom strategies to diverse teaching contexts. This workshop is designed for K-12 educators, higher education faculty, community educators interested in exploring how p4c Hawai'i can be applied outside of the regular classroom setting, teachers interested in interdisciplinary and integrated approaches to education, and teachers who want to apply the practice to traditional subject areas and coursework.

Global Educator Strand: Register by June 30
Punahou School's Global Educator Strand engages educators in the design of curriculum that promotes global citizenship. Participants will collaborate with educators from 25 schools and 11 countries accompanying their students who are participating in the Student Global Leadership Institute. Attendees will share their pedagogies and visions around global education, and through a facilitated design process, participants will also develop curriculum that is based upon resiliency, empathy, global awareness, and other characteristics of a global citizen in order to return to their institutions and implement.
