There is no scientific basis for the common misconception that you shouldn't cook with extra virgin olive oil. Many of the myths around cooking with olive oil have to do with smoke point. Many people mistakenly believe that you should only cook with oils that have a high smoke point.
Proof that the message IS getting out there – in this case, thanks to Australian research and the Olive Wellness Institute’s great work in disseminating it.

Do you process small quantities? We’re looking for small batch processors in NSW – and elsewhere – to join our register
|
|
The
Olivegrower team regularly receive enquiries from people looking for small-batch processors and with harvest on the way, this week we’ve had one from a small grower in the Blue Mountains. Our
Register of small processors generally enables us to connect small producers and suitable processors, to the mutual benefit of both, but we’ve got a bit of a gap in some areas and we’re stumped on this one.
We’re keen to fill that gap – and extend our list to include all processors across Australia and New Zealand willing and able to process small batches of olives.
If this is you, please send your details to Olivegrower editor Gerri Nelligan at
editor@olivegrower.com.au, including contact and pricing details, minimum quantities required, and whether you will crush individually or on a “mix and percentage” basis.
And if you’re anywhere near the Blue Mountains, we’re keen to hear from you ASAP so we can put you in touch with our grower reader.

We recently visited Rylstone Olive Press , an olive oil producer in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales. The Rylstone olive oils are award winners, not only in Australia but internationally against traditional olive growing countries like Greece, Spain and Italy.
More spot-on messages in this article, particularly the final pointers around smoke point and buying Australian.

You might expect a dietitian to tell you to go on a diet — that word is right there in their job title. Yet, like most dietitians, Simone Austin says just the opposite: healthy eating isn't about cutting out all the foods you enjoy eating and condemning yourself to a lifetime of steamed, boiled blandness; it's about adding in nutritious foods and discovering new favourite ways to prepare them.
The response to the ‘in hindsight’ question is right on target!

While olives might sneak into the American diet occasionally, they are an everyday staple for those living in the Mediterranean basin. As a socioeconomically valuable crop for this region, disease is a dreaded concept that researchers and growers constantly fight. For Southern Illinois University Carbondale researcher and doctoral candidate Oussama Badad understanding the tiny little DNA and the organism’s complete genome is the best way to identify, halt and prevent crop diseases.
Genetic resistance to Xylella is one of the tasks on Badad’s radar.

If you keep trying to make a pasta sauce like your nonna (or anyone’s nonna) used to make and you keep falling flat, it probably comes down to one thing: You’re not using enough olive oil.
We reckon pretty much everything needs more (Aust/NZ extra virgin) olive oil!
