Soy-based formula and reproductive development in infants
A longitudinal study of 410 male and female infants fed soy formula, breast milk or cows' milk from birth to 28 and 36 weeks compared estrogen-responsive tissue maturation and sex hormone levels.

Soy formula contains high concentrations of plant-based estrogen-like compounds, and sex organ maturation in female infants fed soy-fed formula show developmental changes in their reproductive system, cells and hormone levels. Long-term effects are unknown.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and future Marijuana use
"Cigarettes have been strongly associated with subsequent marijuana use among adolescents." E-cigarettes are apparently now rapidly replacing traditional cigarette smoking.

A study which examined the association between youth (aged 12-17 years)
e-cigarette use and subsequent marijuana usage indicates that e-cigarette vaping predicts subsequent marijuana use among children adolescents with younger smokers having a greater propensity to heavy marijuana usage.

Maternal caffeine consumption and increased childhood weight gain
It appears from a growing body of evidence that there may be an association between maternal consumption of >200mg caffeine per day (2-3 cups of black coffee) and childhood weight gain. Caffeine avoidance during pregnancy seems wise.

An update on hydrolyzed versus standard formula for preterm infants

The JAMA Clinical Evidence Synopsis summarizes the Cochrane review which indicates that when human milk is unavailable, preterm infants fed a hydrolyzed formula appear to tolerate it better and be less likely to develop necrotizing enterocolitis or other complications.

Concern exists that this practice is not supported by high-quality evidence.

From a study of 68 children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (and their parents) who presented with multiple emotional problems (beyond anxiety ) and regulation issues, and which compared a 10-session CBT intervention to a waitlisted control group, it appears that CBT results in significant improvements in emotionality, emotion regulation/ social skills, internal and externalizing symptoms and adaptive behavior. This lasts during a 10-week follow up period.

Precision medicine, Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) and treatment of "rare diseases"

"Precision medicine (customized care tailored to the individual patient) by leveraging rational pathway-based repurposing of drugs based on genetic variations, is becoming increasingly common in diseases from cancer to epilepsy."

HGPS is an extremely rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder (1:4,000,000 live births) for which there is no known cure. Children with HGPS appear normal at birth but present in infancy with failure to grow, premature aging with early death (average age 14.6 years) from cardiovascular disease. The cause of classical HGPS is a recurrent single-based substitution in the Lamin A gene (LMNA gene). Lamin A is a structured protein of the inner membrane of the cell nucleus and normal production is dependent on a chemical process called farnesylation. Variants in the LMNA gene gives rise to a wide range of diseases including muscular dystrophy, dilated cardiomyopathy etc. (laminopathies)

It appears that existing cancer drugs that inhibit farnesyl-transferase enzymes may be used to treat HGPS and with other repurposed drugs additional rare diseases (of which there are now 7,000, estimated to affect 25-50 million people in the USA).

Phone app for the detection of hyperbilirubinemia in the newborn infant

BiliCam, a low cost easy-to-use camera-based cell phone app to assess post-hospital discharge newborn jaundice, has recently received considerable attention as smart phones have become ubiquitous and the system is non-invasive.

A study across the USA in 7 sites compared the diagnostic accuracy of the BiliCam to serum bilirubin in diagnosing neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Results indicate that correlations between serum and BiliCan levels are 92%, 90% and 88% for white, black, hispanic/asian newborns respectively with the system providing a sufficient level of accuracy to potentially allow for home use.
