Celebrate Pride with Or Shalom
Shabbat: Friday, June 22 @ 7pm
Parade: Sunday, June 24 @ 10am

Join us for a musical Shabbat celebration followed by an exploration of queer Jewish identity led by our own Social Action Fellow and trained Keshet facilitator, Ezra Leventhal!

Additionally, you can celebrate Pride with Or Shalom  Sunday, June 24, at the San Francisco Pride Parade.  Instead of marching, we will gather in one spot along the parade route and provide joyful music and prayer for marchers and onlookers. Meet at 5th and Market under the Nordstrom Rack sign anytime from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Click here to RSVP for the Parade!

If you would prefer to march in the parade, consider joining JCCSF or the 'Straights For Gay Rights' contingent with Saralie Pennington, which will march for the 42nd 'straight' year.  Contact Saralie for more information.

End Inhumane Practices at Our Border

This week we lend our voices to the torrent of righteous outrage that declares the US to be in a State of Moral Emergency as the cruel practice of incarcerating individuals and families at the border traumatizes more and more human beings day by day.  Or Shalom has signed on to a statement from Bend the Arc here.  You can also sign on as an individual.

Pray With Your Feet Opportunities:

You can read the Reconstructing Judaism statement here.
  • An interfaith vigil to end the separation of immigrant families at Grace Cathedral this Thursday evening at 6:15.  Details can be found here.
  • Protest Gathering -- Saturday June 23rd at 10am at Justin Herman Plaza (Embarcadero)
Hear from elected officials, organizations, and community leaders about what Washington is doing, what California can do, and what we as San Franciscans can do to stop this human rights violation. Organized by Women's March Bay Area and others -- details here .
  •  Finally, if you have the availability and the passion, you are invited to a weekend of spiritually grounded protest at the border near San Diego with PICO/ Faith In Action from June 22nd - June 24th. If you are interested, please visit this site

38th San Francisco Jewish Film Festival

The program for the 38th San Francisco Jewish Film Festival is now live! Or Shalom will be sponsoring two films in this year's lineup, A Perfect Day for Banana Leaves and Red Cow. You can get discounted tickets to either of these films with the code  ORSHALOM38

A Perfect Day for Banana Leaves
Bananas grown in the north of Israel reach their final
destination in Gaza. They journey south through the Israeli landscape and toward the Palestinians across the wall as we witness from both sides how the merchants trade and ultimately who profits and who loses in this fascinating business operation.

Red Cow
In a settlement in East Jerusalem, 17-year-old Benny is an outsider because of her red hair and the fact that she is the only daughter of a radicalized Orthodox Jewish father whose wife died giving birth to her. Benny is a loner, choosing to indulge in poetry, pot, praying with tefillin and caring for the family's sacred red heifer. When beautiful newcomer Yael arrives in their small community, Benny smolders with a fire that she had not yet discovered.

Thank you to Outgoing President, Judy Olasov!

Travel with Or Shalom!

Explore the complex layers of Israel and Palestine with your community on a trip that will be spiritual, thought-provoking, and inspirational.

On our first-ever Or Shalom trip to Israel and Palestine, we will:
  • Meet the People - Encounter Israelis and Palestinians from the many diverse communities of Israel and Palestine. Learn about the inspirational cultural and political work that often escapes our headlines across the ocean.
  • Explore the Land - From the contemporary landscape of borders, checkpoints and security fences to the ruins of ancient Israel, to the natural beauty of desert and water, there is no better way to understand or appreciate a place than to be there in person.
  • Learn and Reflect - Our tour will include time and space for learning, spiritual practice, discussion  and  relaxation.

Social Action Torah Study throughout July

San Francisco will rally to oppose the cruel, inhumane and illegal separation of children from their parents/legal guardians along the U.S. border with Mexico, at other ports of entry into the U.S and in our communities. We protest the conditions in which these children are kept. We protest the irreversible trauma that has been perpetrated in our communities for the crime of seeking a better life, migration.
