Drought in Southern Madagascar
|
...from the United Nations World Food Programme
Southern Madagascar is in the grip of a humanitarian catastrophe, with 1.5 million people—half the region’s population—needing immediate emergency food assistance, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned today. Three straight years of drought have wiped out harvests and hampered people's access to food and COVID-19 is compounding their suffering.
Those experiencing “crisis” or “emergency” hunger conditions—three times the number forecast mid-year—are mostly children and women. Of the ten hardest-hit southern districts, Amboasary is the epicenter; families barely scrape together enough food with raw mangoes and tamarind often their only food source. Mothers can no longer breastfeed and are forced to give their infants water which is in scarce supply. A WFP assessment in Amboasary last month found three out of four children had quit school - mostly to help their parents forage for food.
Lutheran Disaster Response
The ELCA is working with the Malagasy Lutheran Church (FLM), through Lutheran Disaster Response, on a food relief project for vulnerable members of affected communities as a short term response, while exploring long-term sustainability projects.

Cultural Architecture
A Path to Creating Vitalized Congregations
by Douglas A. Hill
|
Introducing an exciting new book, by Pastor Doug Hill, Abiding Hope, Littleton, CO!
It is available now for preorder through Fortress Press and will be released on January 26, 2021. If you order before the end of December, Fortress is offering a 30% discount. For more information, go here!
Cultural Architecture: A Path to Creating Vitalized Congregations serves to assist pastors and leaders as they guide their congregations through the painstaking and intensive process of redevelopment. It provides hands-on tools to guide congregational leaders in creating vision, core values, and strategic plans. It is a valuable resource to professors of practical theology and internship supervisors as they instruct students in organizational development. Judicatory leaders can utilize this book for training their pastors and leaders in cultural awareness as it relates to congregational development. Although Hill's approach is grounded in his experiences within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, his systems for cultural architecture can be applied to congregations of any denomination.

Conversations for Connection: Supporting Mental Health
“The Healing Power of Music”
Thursday, December 17, 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
|
It has been said that music can heal the wounds that medicine cannot touch. For centuries people have experienced the healing power of music, but lately scientists have studied the benefits of music on people's mental and physical health and have discovered that music can relax the mind, energize the body, and even help people better manage pain. In this conversation, we will spend a little bit of time examining some of the research that has been conducted on music and its healing powers, and more time sharing in that healing together, as we listen to and watch performances of some of our favorite music. Paula Nichols will lead the conversation. If you have a particular piece of music that you would like to have shared, please email her at p.nichols55@gmail.com. Paula is the Director of Music at Atonement Lutheran Church in Boulder and has taught music in schools for over 35 years.

In addition, the building is in need of winterizing (roof repairs, windows where there are currently cut-outs in the external walls, electrical wiring fixes for heating, etc.).
If you would like to contribute to this effort, please see the LGBTQ+ Asylum-Seeker Shelter Wish List > here.
