Two very important committees are being formed by AIA Dayton for 2019 – 2020
One is the 2019 Focus on Design Awards Committee . Yes, AIA Dayton just had a Focus on Design Awards Program in 2018 and while the normal rotation is FOD Awards, then FOD Lecture the next year, the 2020 AIA Ohio Convention – scheduled for Dayton – has made us decide to change the schedule. With a date and a venue already under consideration, we just need a few members who are interested in the “behind the scenes” work of putting on the design awards program. There are about 4 – 5 committee meetings, an occasional conference call, and a lot of emails between committee members. The first meeting will be held Friday, April 12 at 1:00 pm at Panera on Brown Street. If you are interested in attending, please let Brian McAlexander, AIA, President, or Jane Treiber know.

The other committee is the 2020 AIA Ohio Convention Committee . The local chairman is Charlie Setterfield, AIA, and the work is just getting started! The Convention will be held in either September or October 2020. The local committee is responsible for hotel and meeting venue selection, theme development, the Icebreaker event, the Awards Program venue selection, and fundraising through sponsorships and exhibits. Dayton will also have representative on the program committee, which is comprised of AIA members from across the state. This is a great opportunity to be involved in the planning for a statewide convention attended by 250 architects and design professionals. If interested, contact Charlie Setterfield , AIA.

The build is October 2 at the Dayton Mall and teams have until July 19 to register. Last year, the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors brought CANstruction back to the Miami Valley, and AIA Dayton was a proud sponsor of the event. Three AIA Dayton teams participated in the event – Levin-Porter Associates, App Architecture, and CESO, with CESO winning the People’s Choice Award.

Click here for the flyer for the event to post in your workplace, and click here to go to the ABC website and register for the event. The goal this year is 20 teams and 50,000 cans. If you thought about it last year but didn’t get around to registering, sign up this year for a fun team-building, community-oriented event!

Architecture Industry Steady, but Long-term National Forecast Unclear
As one local architect noted, we’re far enough away from the last recession to start worrying about the next one — and recessions tend to hit this sector particularly hard. Still, despite mixed signals in the long-term economic picture nationally, work remains steady locally, with municipalities, colleges, and businesses of all kinds continuing to invest in capital projects. Even if storm clouds do appear down the road, the 2019 outlook in architecture seems bright.

Why is this Corpus Christi woman the architecture world's equivalent of an Oscar winner?
What could be bigger than an Oscar?
Why ask? Because of an honor conferred recently upon Corpus Christi architect Elizabeth Chu Richter. She was named a fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, which has existed since 1908 and has been allowed to call itself "royal" since 1909, the year William Howard Taft became president of the country to the south. This institute predates the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by 19 years, if you're counting.

Here's How Much Architects Earn In Every State
Architecture is a career that captivates the minds of many people, including George Costanza of "Seinfeld," who says he's always wanted to pretend to be an architect. In terms of income, architects do fairly well. As of 2017, the average income of architects has reached $88,860, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment Statistics. But you won't earn that salary anywhere in the U.S. just because you've got architectural credentials. Where you decide to work has a huge impact on your salary. Read on to see a full breakdown below of where architects' incomes are the worst, and  where their incomes are the best.
