April 2019 Newsletter
Most of the United States looks forward to the coming of spring as we turn the calendar to the month of April. Spring holds the promise of new life through the budding of trees, blooming of flowers, and longer days of sunlight. We celebrate Easter and also honor the women in our lives and around the world through observances such as International Women's Day and Mother's Day.

This edition of our e-newsletter highlights our Women's Ministry. Read the story of Avigail and how her life as a woman has been transformed through the Women's Ministry at CEDEPCA. Read about how CEDEPCA participated in International Women's Day. Consider honoring a woman in your life through a donation to the Women's Program at CEDEPCA this spring. Doing so will bless the one you honor, as well as women in Guatemala.

Finally, we give thanks, for you!!

In Christ,

The Women's Ministry program of CEDEPCA is committed to the formation of critical thinking skills in women in order to empower them to deconstruct patriarchal and androcentric structures, and to build relationships of equality and equity. Through formation and accompaniment, women elevate their self-esteem, appropriate their rights, learn to prevent all types of violence (especially sexual violence), learn to resist religious fundamentalism and to practice a liberating faith in order to transform the realities in their personal lives and in their communities.

We share the story of Avigail, a woman and young mother who grew up in the church as a pastor's daughter. In Guatemala, this means that to a certain degree she grew up without autonomy and without self-identity.

When I first came to CEDEPCA, I arrived with a lot of baggage and frustrations because I didn't fit the stereotypes imposed on women: quiet, submissive and hard working. Once in my church they had even prayed for me because I had some "defect." But I felt restless inside because I knew that I could do more than cook and clean.  Read on...

"I am a woman of faith, I defend the life of girls."
Women's Ministry celebrates International Women's Day 2019!

The Women's Ministry is a proud participant of  International Women's Day 2019. The campaign theme of #Betterforbalance was a call-to-action for driving gender balance across the world.

CEDEPCA women and staff realize that NOW is a great and important time in history to do everything possible to help forge a more gender-balanced world as Guatemala has the highest rate of pregnancy in girls and teenagers because of sexual abuse. These statistics highlight underage pregnant girls, not the abuser. CEDEPCA encourages all females to: know their rights and share them with other women,  participate in workshops about women's rights, be part of a network or a movement in behalf of women's rights, and invest in, and empower girls and women through opportunities of education.

Women have come a long way, yet there's still more to be achieved. From grassroots activism to worldwide action, we are entering an exciting period of history where the world expects balance. We notice its absence and celebrate its presence. See how!
