Use Your Gifts & Be A Blessing!
|
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,
the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord. Isaiah 11:1-2 (NIV)
In a passionate and rousing closing Annual Conference sermon, Bishop Sharma Lewis urged the delegates, observers, and all Virginia United Methodists to “Use Your Gifts!” Bishop Lewis asked, “what would the Commonwealth of Virginia be like if every United Methodist and every Christian shared just one gift a day?”
Sharing gifts and sharing blessings was an amazing part of the entire Annual Conference experience with the highlight of Annual Conference being the Great Day of Service. On Saturday, the 16
th, more than 1,600 volunteers engaged in hands on mission ministries, some at the site of the Convention Center and many more around the city of Hampton. Those who left the Convention Center cleaned up city waterways from their kayaks and canoes, others did community park clean up, while others cleared and cleaned overgrowth in some of the Hampton cemeteries.
The acts of grace and mercy didn’t end with the Great Day of Service. By the end of the Annual Conference we had collected and prepared 40,228 kits for shipping. We prepared Hygiene kits, School kits, and Cleaning supply kits. We also collected 9,000 pounds of non-perishable food. In addition to our renewed commitment to strengthen our Virginia UM churches we turned our sights to people around the world who are suffering. Our response to Native American needs, international disasters, human suffering, and people living in destitute situations was to collect a special offering. The special offering will go to ministries in Brazil, Cambodia, Cuba, Haiti, Moscow, Mozambique, Native American ministries, and Disaster recovery in Puerto Rico.
This 2018 Annual Conference was a time of powerful worship, important business, inspiring music, providing both human and financial resources to the least among us. At this Annual Conference we “talked the talk, and walked the walk” demonstrating the core values of the Christian.
Among the necessary sharing was a time led by the Reverend Tom Berlin, lead pastor of Floris UMC. Rev. Berlin served on the Commission on the Way Forward, a group commissioned by the 2016 General Conference to prayerfully bring to a called 2019 General Conference proposals that might help the UMC navigate difficult human sexuality issues and disagreements. Rev. Berlin very quickly shared a power point presentation on the Council of Bishops’ recommendation, other proposals, and the implications of three Commission on the Way Forward proposals.
