RISE Winter 2019 Retreat
March 2019

This newsletter will provide an update on some of the many exciting recent activities, accomplishments, and events at RISELab.

Most notably, we are excited to announce the launch of RISELab's DARE program . One of the most challenging barriers to participating in research for undergraduate students is reaching out to professors and finding a match that works for both the student and the professor.  DARE, founded by Professor Raluca Ada Popa and her students Wenting Zheng and Jessica Ji, acts as an active liaison to remove this barrier and make electrical engineering and computer science research more readily accessible, as well as to encourage diversity of thought in these growing fields. DARE strongly encourages women and traditionally under-represented groups to apply.

Our faculty were honored by several significant awards. Professor David Culler received the prestigious ACM SenSys Test of Time Award for 2018 , and the ACM SenSys '18 Best Paper Runner-up Award for his group work on system architecture for networked sensors. Professor Ion Stoica, together with Xin Jin (a RISELab alumni and now a faculty at Johns Hopkins University) received the Best Paper Award at the 17th USENIX Conference on File and Storage Technologies (Fast) for their work on provable load-balancing techniques for distributed caching in large scale systems.

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the landmark publication " Above the Clouds: A Berkeley View of Cloud Computing " which cleared up the considerable confusion about the new notion of "Cloud Computing," we have published " Cloud Programming Simplified: A Berkeley View on Serverless Computing " with some of the same authors. Serverless Computing provides an interface that greatly simplifies cloud programming, and represents an evolution that closely parallels past advances in programmer productivity, such as the transition from assembly language to high-level programming languages.

Another paper authored by the members of RISELab, " Serverless Computing: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back, " is focusing  on the limitations and the research opportunities in serverless computing, and was published at CIDR 2019 .
We also continue to publish influential papers in several top systems and AI venues.  These papers address topics ranging from cryptographic primitives and efficient communication protocols to new frameworks for distributed reinforcement learning and second order optimization methods for neural networks.

Some of our systems have been seeing broader adoption. In particular, Ray has now reached over 130 contributors and over 6,000 Github stars. Furthermore, our collaborator and sponsor, Ant Financial, uses it in production for the Double Eleven (Nov 11th)  shopping festival-- the Chinese Black Friday --to detect frauds. The system detected around 17,000 fraudulent transactions during the first hour, while increasing the recall rate by 35% compared to the previous system.

More details on these and other activities are below.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at upcoming RISE events.
