Congratulations Knights of the Week!

Congratulations to this week's Knights of the Week!
Emily Paulin

Emily is always so helpful in my class. She is always offering her assistance with the equipment, papers, etc... She will hold the door for anyone and always does it with a smile. If she has extra's of any pastries or treats, she always stops by and offer's one. She is a very kind, thoughtful and generous person.

Max is an awesome person. He is kind, caring, and selfless. Max is an outstanding student and teammate, and he simply makes BK a better community. We are lucky to have him!
Natalie Foster

Natalie is a leader in the classroom. She works hard to understand difficult material and is not afraid to speak up and voice questions that end up helping all the students in the class.
Chase Minert
Academic Excellence
Chase is an amazing young man! He contributes every day in class and gives 100%. His enthusiasm is contagious. I enjoy his sense of humor and positive attitude.

Just In Time Information - Mental Wellness in School and Home
According to a 2014 American Psychological Association study, findings show that teens in the U.S. are even more stressed than adults. A certain amount of stress is normal and can actually have benefits. However, when teens are exposed to repeated stressful events without the tools to manage feelings, stress can become emotionally and physically toxic. School tends to be the top source of stress for teens.

Some causes of stress in teens:
  • Earning good grades
  • Preparing for college
  • Romantic relationships
  • Social acceptance
  • Parental pressure
  • Significant life changes

Symptoms of stress and what to watch for:
  • Nausea/digestive issues
  • Skipping meals or overeating
  • Sadness or depression
  • Moodiness
  • Cutting class
  • Sleep problems
  • Substance abuse
  • Headaches
  • Chronic worrying
  • Isolating from friends and family
  • Ignoring chores/school work
  • Frequent absences
  • Lying to teachers/parents
  • Withdrawal from friends
  • Frequent physical aches and pains
  • Fatigue
  • Self-harm
  • Not doing things that used to be fun
  • Quick to anger
  • Failing grades
  • Suicidal thoughts

How can I help my student manage and reduce his or her stress?
Below are some tips to help you manage and reduce your students’ stress. Helping them take control of their life is the foundation for stress management and a healthier teen.

Be sure that your student is taking tests at the regularly scheduled times
Missing regularly scheduled final exams is stressful for students and faculty. Scheduling vacations or appointments during finals week should be avoided. Students who take final exams after returning from Christmas break are not able to maximize their potential to do well.

Don’t overschedule your student
School and extracurricular activities are important, but there’s a point when it’s too much. When you schedule your week, schedule it for school work and extracurricular activities, but also schedule down-time and time to have fun.

Ensure the right amount of sleep
Between school work and activities, it can be hard for your teen to get enough sleep, especially during the school week. Ideally, adolescents should receive 9 hours of sleep per night. Sleep is the key to physical and emotional well-being. Help your student cut back on watching TV or engaging in a lot of screen time in the late evening hours. Also, cut back on caffeine (especially those Dutch Bros drinks) late in the day and reduce stimulating activities close to bedtime.

Serve a healthy diet
When we are feeling stressed, we often want to reach for “comfort foods.” These high-fat foods are usually the worst possible choices because they can make us feel lethargic and less able to deal with stress. The best solution is to incorporate a balanced diet of low-fat, high-fiber, carbohydrate-rich meals with plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Incorporate exercise into the day
Physical activity is one of the most effective stress relievers. Help your student find an activity they enjoy and encourage them to build it into their daily routine.

Model self-care
As parents, modeling appropriate self-care can be a daunting task. With the pressures we face, sometimes it’s difficult to handle our own stress. Take some time to also use the above tips and find a healthy balance in your own life.

Our counselors are always willing to help your student find a healthy balance with school and stress and can help your student process their emotions and learn coping skills. Additional community referrals are available for situations requiring more in-depth counseling.

Note from the Nurse
A select number of BK students have been working with the American Lung Association to provide classes in tobacco and vaping prevention techniques for some of our younger students in the Catholic elementary schools. TATU (Teens Against Tobacco Use) is a well established program that we hope will have a positive effect on both the instructors and the students they teach. Classes are being scheduled for November and December, with a target group of 5 th grade students.

I have 60 doses of student flu vaccine available. Please consider having your student receive the vaccine. The consent form and information sheet is available on BK Alive. Hard copies are also available in my office.

Thank you

Speech and Debate Team Update
BK Speech and Debate season is in full swing. We have had three tournaments with much success to talk about.

At Timberline Varsity only competed for the first time this year, shaking off all the dust from the summer. Houston Phillips did an excellent job and took first place in Congressional Debate.

Then at Borah, the new students, or novices, cleaned up. Everyone had a winning record, and several went undefeated; Sarah Clevenger, Madison Dixon, Gabe Lamey, Sarah East, Peyton Jungert, and Bridget McDonagh all had straight wins throughout the tournament! On top of that, it was our biggest novice turnout with everyone competing.

Finally, the Speech and Debate team had AMAZING success when competing over the last weekend at Rocky Mountain HS. Andrew Severance, Chris Rodriquez, and John Mulhern all went to finals in their Speech events. Houston Phillips and Jesse Risch went to finals in Congress and Jesse took first! Audrey Spooner, Madison Dixon and Sarah Clevenger went to quarterfinals in Debate. Finally, Peyton Jungert, and Bridget McDonagh went to semi-finals in Public Forum debate. Catch us at Nampa High School on November 15th, and 16th to watch more!

BK Online Auction
The BK online auction closes this Sunday, November 10, at midnight. Visit  bishopkellyauction.org  to take advantage of some fun items.

Included are tuition gift certificates for those of you with students at Carroll or Gonzaga!

Who wouldn't love a small discount off college tuition? Carroll provides $1,000 gift certificates that can be used in any one of the next four years, from 2020-2021 on at $500 per semester. The only catch is that only one per student per year can be used--so you can't buy 4 and use them all next year. Bidding starts at $450.

Gonzaga provides the same deal for $500 gift certificates. Bidding on those start at $300.

We hope some of you take advantage of this opportunity. Just visit  bishopkellyauction.org . We are so grateful to the colleges that provide this donation to BK!
If you’ve been admitted to the University of Idaho, or even if you’re still exploring us, Meet the Vandals is a great way for you and your family to get to know us better, without having to travel far from home.

This special one-night event brings the best of the University of Idaho to The Boise Centre East (850 W Front Street) on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 5:30-8 p.m.

Attend a Meet the Vandals Event for your chance at a $1000 scholarship!
The Future Vandal Award, a one time, non-renewable $1,000 scholarship, will be given away at each event to a high school senior or transfer student looking to enroll at the University of Idaho for the Fall 2020 term.
