See what tobacco prevention has been up to in
Winnebago, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Kewaunee, and Door counties!

Our mission is to improve the health of our residents by reducing tobacco use and exposure through prevention strategies which include community outreach and involvement to move policy forward collaboratively,  across our multi-jurisdictional area.

eUpdate: May 2018
Welcome [back] Jamie Constantine!

You may recognize this familiar face! Jamie Constantine, a former Winnebago FACT member and one of the original re:TH!NK Youth Coalition members, has returned for a summer internship with re:TH!NK! Jamie will be working with Lynnsey at the Winnebago County Health Department to provide community education for the new tobacco-free parks rule in Oshkosh and helping with WI Wins tobacco compliance checks. Jamie graduated from Oshkosh West in 2017 and has spent the last 8 months volunteering in Ecuador through Global Citizen Year. She was recently accepted into Oxford College of Emory University in Atlanta and will be starting her undergrad there this fall! Jamie is interested in studying public health, public policy, and/or political science. Jamie played a big role in advocating for tobacco-free parks during her high school years in Oshkosh, and we're excited to have her back to see her hard work come full circle!
FACT in Action....

On April 11, MELT (Middle Extended Day Learning Time) students from Tipler/ALPS and Merrill Middle Schools cleaned up Menominee Park in Oshkosh as part of their service project. They picked up 864 cigarette butts in less than an hour! Hopefully this will be one of our last cigarette butt cleanups with the new tobacco-free parks rule in Oshkosh. Thanks to the students for being part of the next tobacco-free generation!

T wo Rivers High School FACT students completed the Post-It FACTivism and educated their peers about tobacco and how it has harmed people they care about.

Two River High School FACT students went to L.B. Clarke Middle School to present about FACT in April! The students also talked about JUULs and many of the teachers were alarmed at how many of the students knew someone who uses JUUL.
E-liquid or Food Product?

FDA and the Federal Trade Commission warned companies on May 1, 2018 to stop misleading kids with e-liquids that resemble children's juice boxes, candy, and cookies. Exposure to the nicotine in e-liquids can be toxic, especially to young children who touch or ingest e-liquid. In fact, the continuing rise in popularity of products like e-cigarettes, which often contain e-liquids, has coincided with an increase in reported e-liquid poisonings. From January 2012 to April 2017, the National Poison Data System received 8,269 calls related to e-liquid exposure in children younger than six. https://go.usa.gov/xQ8Bg
Email List Sharing for the new Partnership for a Tobacco-Free Wisconsin!

A statewide tobacco prevention coalition is an important part of a strong tobacco prevention and control movement. Wisconsin has a growing statewide coalition called Partnership for a Tobacco Free Wisconsin. You can learn more about the statewide coalition here: https://www.tobaccofreewisconsin.org/.

This coalition shares the overall goals of re:TH!NK, the Lakeshore Tobacco Prevention Network, so we would like to share our contact list with their new coordinator, Darcie Warren. This list sharing will include information like your email address, home address, phone number, and affiliate organization, if applicable. Just like our organization, the Partnership for a Tobacco Free Wisconsin will never sell your contact information, and they will only contact you regarding pertinent tobacco control-related information.

If you choose to opt-out of this list sharing, please contact Cath Tease or Lynnsey Erickson by Friday, May 25. If you would like more information about the type or frequency of contacts you may receive from the Partnership for a Tobacco Free Wisconsin, please contact Darcie at [email protected] or 262-703-4848.

New Tips from Former Smokers Ads

New Tips from Former Smokers ads launched on April 23, and they are just as powerful as ever! The ads feature returning Tips participants and effectively illustrate the pain and struggle that comes with living with tobacco-related illness. The ads will be on the air for 25 weeks.  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) marks the seventh  year commercials have run featuring real people who are living with the effects of smoking-related diseases and secondhand smoke exposure.

[Did you know?]  Tobacco Trivia

One JUULpod is packed with the same amount of nicotine found in a pack of cigarettes (and on average costs less).
