MLGW issues new scam alert -
demands for bill payments by phone

Local customers have reported to Memphis Light Gas and Water that they are receiving telephone requests for payments with a threat of disconnection of services.

It is a scam, the utility reported: "MLGW does not request payments over the phone."

The scammers use phone "spoofing" technology so that caller ID displays on phones appear to present the utility division's number. MLGW urges customers to do the following if they receive such a call:
* Hang up immediately.
* Never give out personal financial information on the phone.
* Call MLGW to report concerns: (901) 544-6549.
* Report the scam to your local police station as it is fraud.

Scammers frequently target older citizens who more often will have an older phone number and phone service. To see more information about scams targeting seniors, visit the  SeniorBsafe website

Now you can give a ticket
to a police officer

Sure, you can turn the tables. All you have to do is make a donation to CrimeStoppers of $100 to pay to send a police officer and guest to the Bobbye Weinberger CrimeStoppers Night At The Theatre event this year.

CrimeStoppers has the full house at Playhouse On The Square for a June 22, 2018 performance of the musical Dreamgirls. Some of the 347 seats have been set aside in order to make it possible for Memphis' finest to enjoy a good meal and
attend the show that night.

Many of our supporters already have stepped up and covered the show for some officers and their spouses or friends. It's easy to do online here

Or send a check to CrimeStoppers (with "tickets for officers" on the memo line) at 600 Jefferson Avenue, Suite 451, Memphis, TN 38105.

Serial numbers
- and tipster -
solve 12 cases

Accused serial burglar Marcus Freeman hit one too many houses in a spree earlier this year. Late at night, he broke into a shed behind a house in South Memphis and left with a variety of tools.

He then took the tools to a pawn shop. Fortunately for the owner, serial numbers had been recorded. That led to an arrest warrant and a tipster led police to Freeman's address.

When all was said and done, 12 burglary cases on active file with the Memphis Police Department were solved, thanks to the tip called in on March 12, and the homeowner's diligence in keeping records.

By the numbers

By the end of April, CrimeStoppers had awarded $34,500  so far this year in cash awards for 92 successful tips received.

The tips have led to the clearing of 87 cases - including five homicides - and the arrests of 97 individuals who were either suspects in felony cases, or fugitives from justice.
