This Sunday

This Sunday we welcome Ms. Cynthia Wilcox.   Her sermon is entitled "Tiny Starts - Big Finishes" and is based on Mark 4:26-34.

Cindy (Garrett) Wilcox is a native of the Jersey Shore (Manasquan High School, '84). She went to Gordon College in Boston, stayed in the area, married, raised four children, and was a personal trainer and life coach in Andover, MA. In 2013 she returned to New Jersey and last month graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary with a Masters in Divinity.

She is presently a chaplain at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and lives with her husband and daughter in Fairway Mews.

Military: Kyle Barker; Sarah Davis Brown; Morgan Daniels Colberg; Michael Fahey III; Jeffrey Hanrahan, Matthew Warren; all those in our nation's service.

For our Church: Wisdom, guidance and patience during this transitional time.

Happy Father's Day

We wish a very happy Father's Day to all the father's and grandfathers of our church.  Fatherhood is an important role that deserves to be celebrated. Our church is blessed with many dads and grandfathers that let their faith and love shine forth. Fatherhood does not come with a manual, and reality teaches us that some fathers excel while others fail.  We pray for blessings for them all and forgiveness where it is needed.

The first observance of Father's Day took place in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908.  It was organized by Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in the Monongah Mining disaster several months earlier in Monongah, West Virginia, on December 6, 1907.  It's possible that Clayton was influenced by the first celebration of Mother's Day that same year, just a few miles away.

A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913.  In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father's Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation.  Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress.  In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus "singling out just one of our two parents".  In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

Host Families Wanted

Once again this Summer our community will be visited by a group of students from Spain for 4 weeks beginning on June 27th and leave on July 26th. The students, ages 14-18, are coming because they have a desire to learn about American culture as well as to improve their English. The students are well-motivated, English-proficient, fully insured and have their own spending money. The basic responsibility of the family is to provide a bed, food, and lots of TLC by allowing the student to feel like a part of the family.  There are six students left that need to be placed.  If you are able to host or desire more information please call Scot King (732) 892-2571, or email at Scot4Camille@gmail.com. Hosting is an extremely enlightening and rewarding experience for the entire family.

Office Coverage Needed

The Church Secretary, Kim Gaydos, will be on vacation from June 25-29, the last week in June. We are looking for volunteers for the week to split up the week. If you are available to work a half a day or a full day and cover the office, please contact the church office.  Donna Ferry will be in during her regular hours that week.

Note:  All bulletin information and announcements for the July 1 bulletin will be due June 20th so that the bulletin can be done early.   The Rev. Linda Chase will be on vacation June 18-24th.  She will return to the office on June 25. Should you have an emergency while she is away that week, please call the church office.

General Assembly This Week

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) meets biennially in even-numbered years. It consists of commissioners elected by each of its 173 presbyteries. The GA is full of activities: business sessions, committee meetings, an exhibit hall, daily worship services, and mission tours sponsored by the Committee on Local Arrangements.

The assembly acts on hundreds of items of business, which it receives through the reports and recommendations of various assembly entities, and through overtures from synods and presbyteries.

This year the 223rd General Assembly (2018) will be held in St. Louis, Missouri - June 16 - 23.  Let us keep the members of our General Assembly in prayer that they may discern new things for our denomination as well as respect traditions that are good for all people.

Dine Around This Month

All Presbyterian Women are invited to "dine around" locally the last Wednesday of each month.

This month on June 27th we will be going to Houlahans, at  491    Rt. 70  in Brick, by Costco's.

We'd love all PWs to join the fun, get to know one another better, share the fellowship.  If you plan to attend please call Maggie Gaise at 732-295-0908 or Lynn Hahm at 732-920-7133 so we can reserve space, but if you are not sure, just come and we'll make room for everyone!

Please mark your calendars now for that Ladies Night Out.  It's fun!!

Important Updates
Update

The upcoming Session meeting next week will be full of business as usual. Many committees are faithfully working at their tasks at hand. The Session highlights will be announced next week. In the meantime two important updates we would like to share with the congregation.

1. The Interim Committee has been meeting weekly and reviewing many sermons. The committee will now interview several candidates next week.  We are still hoping to reach our target of having an Interim by the Fall.

2. The final recommended New Beginning Report will be presented to the Session at the July Session meeting. The final report will include a consensus from the group leaders as well as our future story.

Watch for more information on both these important items in the upcoming weeks.

AMPED Vacation Bible School
Live Fully Alive!

Our new curriculum centers on faith and encourages hands-on learning and fun!

Each day we will worship, experience a new Bible story, watch a video, create a craft, enjoy snack, learn new songs with exciting dance moves, and play a game. Thursday night will be family night.

For our Mission Project, we will supply special items for backpacks (i.e. pajamas, pillow pets, pillow buddy, stuffed animal, blanket, child's book) to be given to temporarily homeless children who participate with their families in our Interfaith Hospitality Network throughout the year.

VBS Donations Needed

As we begin preparing for VBS, we are in need of contributions, either financial, small waters or individually wrapped snacks for the week.  Donations can be placed in the marked bins in the Narthex.  For donations please indicated "VBS snacks" on your check.

Anything you provide will be extremely helpful to making this year a success. Thank you for your time!

Summer Bible Study

At the request of many of you there will be a Summer Bible study.

By popular demand, we will use a book we have used before called "Embracing Forgiveness."  This is a 5 week study that will be held on each Monday during the month of July.  The first class will be July 2nd at 11: 3 0 a.m .

You are welcome to bring a lunch or perhaps some would like to go out to lunch afterward.

If you would like us to order a book for you for $10, please let Linda Chase know or you may order yours directly online.  A signup sheet is in the Narthex.

Barbara Cawthorne Crafton, begins the study Embracing Forgiveness, with clarity that eases the guilt often associated with the lack of forgiveness by saying what it isn't. It is not a job or task; it is not a conditional act to earn God's love. It is, Crafton believes, a spiritual gift given freely by a God who simply wants to connect with us.

This Week at Point Beach Prep

Wow! It is hard to believe the school year is over. We have had another great year here at Point Beach Prep! Our students have learned so much! Over the year, our class built their knowledge of letters and letter sounds by meeting all of our letter dolls from A-Z. They learned letter recognition and brainstormed words that started with each letter. They learned the sign language for each alphabet letter, and a sign language word. They practiced writing their letters with pencil power. We saw emergent writing when mock letters became stories! They enjoyed bringing in a Show and Tell item weekly for the different letters. Every week our Pre-K also learned a new word on our sight word tree.

The children learned their numbers and colors. They sang and danced to many great songs. We read SO many interesting books, and literacy was emerging! Our class explored with squishy shaving cream, and played with many different textures in our sensory table. They built a volcano and watched it erupt, and explored properties of magnets. Our artists used their creativity at imagination station by painting at the easel, and making whatever they could imagine with markers, crayons, colored pencils, glue, scissors, etc. At our small group project table they made many projects related to our letters and themes. Imaginations were developed in our dramatic play areas. Through the staging of a Veterinarian's office, construction site, play school, horse barn, Christmas wrapping station, grocery store, ice cream stand, Build a Bear workshop, and an under the sea area complete with a boat- the children built thinking skills and developed social, emotional and language skills!

Each child enjoyed being Student of the Week. They took Brown Bear home with them and wrote about their adventures. Our friends all loved having their special person come in with them during their week to read stories, play guitar, do science experiments, and make cool crafts. We even met a lobster and learned how to go crabbing with a cage!
Every student eagerly anticipated being given a special job daily. They learned responsibility by taking turns being the prayer leader, line leader, caboose, project helper, outdoor helper, bell ringer, snack counter, calendar helper, doing days of the week, weather, attendance, turning on/off the lights, holding the flag, being the librarian and the center checker.

Outside, we played Duck Duck Goose, Farmer in the Dell, Simon Says, many games with the parachute, drew with chalk, rode tricycles, cars, scooters, and enjoyed the playground.

We enjoyed having Art Teacher Karen Norby come in several times to do lessons on shapes, line, and texture. We listened to the musician JoDee Anderson and were able to play her violin and cello. We danced and sang to children's entertainer Yosi! We enjoyed author Beth Ferry, who read her book Stick and Stone. We exercised with Soccer Shots coaches. We had 2 different dentists come in to teach us good oral hygiene and even had a visit from the Tooth Fairy!

The High School Child Development Class coming to our school was always a big hit. They performed puppet shows, and together we made yummy fruit kabobs and pancakes. It was a special treat to have a field trip to the High School to go trick or treating with them!

Our field trip to the Aquarium was a big success. We saw all kinds of sea creatures. We especially liked our private lesson about penguins. We were also excited to touch different animals from the touch tank!

We had many special events such as our Halloween Parade, Picture Day, Thanksgiving Show, Christmas Sing-a-long, Valentine's parties, Mother's Day Tea, and Graduation.
We have all had so much fun, it is hard to believe we were learning the whole time! (Shhh!!!) Thank you for a wonderful year. We wish our graduating students best of luck in kindergarten, we will miss you dearly! Have a safe and happy summer!
