Dear Members and Friends,
We are sorry to have lost two of the pioneers of Diablo Valley Literacy Council: Chancey Henneman and Evelyn Hidy, who passed away in December and January respectively. Chancey spoke to us last summer at our annual Get Together and she attended the Holiday Luncheon in December. Read more about her active involvement for over 40 years. [article in this newsletter]
At the January annual meeting, following business meeting and luncheon there were drawings for three door prizes: $50 Macy's gift card, $10 library certificate and $15 DVLC library gift card. Congratulations to the winners!
Highlight of the annual meeting was a presentation by journalist and author, Michelle Carter, speaking to us about her experiences while living and working in Russia. She has written two books about Russia, her most recent being "From Under the Russian Snow," an engaging glimpse int
o a very different culture.
Our March workshop brought us a dozen highly qualified new tutors. We re-instituted a mentoring program so that each new tutor has somebody in the organization to refer to for questions and advice. During the workshop we allowed time for the mentors: Mary Nash, Mary Thomas, Rachel Sanborn and Wendy Bojin-Liston to meet with the three or four tutors each has been assigned to guide and follow up with.
On the second day of the workshop five of our tutors spoke about personal experiences with their students. Thank you to Mary Thomas, Wendy Bojin-Liston, Renaye Johnson, Rachel Sanborn, and Steve Mico for some valuable tips on the resources they have drawn on to address the ESL needs of their adult students.
The new tutors will have a chance to reconvene on Saturday, April 13 to share their experiences so far.
Our next Tutor Training Workshop is scheduled for October 5 and 12.

Chancey Vincenza Henneman, 1923-2019
|
Chancey Henneman cared deeply about helping those who could benefit from her skills in teaching. Her degree from University of Dubuque in Chicago was in Education and she taught in Wisconsin before she met her husband. She married and raised her family of four children in Long Beach, California. While living in Long Beach Chancey took a 6-week training program in order to tutor Basic English as well as ESL.
In 1978 after she and her family moved to Concord, a newly formed group of 5 founding members for the Diablo Valley Literacy Council learned of Chancey's experience and asked her to join the Council. Here Chancey started tutoring through the Social Service Department of Contra Costa County, often in the County Jail or wherever she was needed.
Within a couple of years, the members of DVLC, at the request of a local library group, trained Project Second Chance tutors to instruct Basic English students. At that time DVLC shifted to tutoring only English-as-a-Second-Language adult learners. Chancey's earlier training made her very important in this transition. For forty years she has continued tutoring and serving on the Board of DVLC in many capacities, serving the needs of those from other cultures who have the determination to learn English.
Even after retiring from the Board two years ago, Chancey has participated in our annual summer get-togethers and holiday luncheons. We will greatly miss her smiles and encouragements.

Fourth Quarter reports from tutors included fun student news. One student passed the driving test, another applied for and received her library card, and another had a baby and her tutor gave her a baby shower!
