Rector's Ramblings

I have liked the Baltimore Orioles since I was a kid. I've been to Camden Yards a number of times, although every time I've seen them play in person, they've lost. They've done that a lot in my lifetime. The American League East has some great teams, notably our nemesis, the New York Yankees, so it's never been an easy effort to get on or stay on top. Last year was particularly difficult, and it's safe to say that this year is considered a rebuilding year, with a new coach and a number of new players starting. Since opening day, we've also seen a shakeup in positions and pitching rosters too.

If you saw the movie,  Moneyball , a few years ago, you know how much statistics and computer models influence the game now. Smart owners employ as much data as possible to run the odds on a player, a team, and many other things. They can tweak things here and there, based on probabilities to put together the ideal team, at least on paper. But for all that such technology is useful, it is not a perfect science, and sometimes odds are made just to be beaten.

Worship

Special Music During Lent and Easter
The opening Voluntary this week is an organ Chorale Prelude set by Helmut Walcha based on O Holy Jesus. Helmut Walcha (1907-1991) was a blind German organist who is known for his recordings of the complete organ works of J. S. Bach.  The Offertory Anthem in the Historic Church liturgies this week is Dear Lord and Father of Mankind composed by C. Hurbert H. Parry (1848-1918), a well known English composer, teacher, and historian of music. This hymn arrangement is based on Hymn 653 in the 1982 Hymnal if you'd like to follow the text.

It's the first Sunday of the month which means the Trebles and Choristers lead the communion music at the 9:15 service in the Historic Church. (They sing in the Parish Hall most 3rd Sundays). The next time you will hear them is Easter Sunday, April 21.

Our Parish Hall liturgy will offer The Servant Song authored by Richard Gillard (b. 1953) and How Can We Be Silent, a moving anthem by Michael Mahler (b. 1981) with a powerful call to mission and ministry.

The choirs are hard at work preparing for Holy Week and Easter. There will be Brass and Timpani in both 9:15 Easter Sunday Services. In addition to this there will be Harpist and the Christ Church Handbell Choir offering their gifts in the Parish Hall Service.

Holy Week and Easter Worship Schedule

Formation

Adult Sunday Morning Class
Note: The Adult Sunday Morning Class will NOT meet on April 7, but will resume the Lenten study on April 14. The Sunday Morning Adult Class, led by Rev. Dr. Robert W. (Bob) Brown is currently engaged in a Lenten study based on the book by Max O. Vincent entitled  Because of This I Rejoice:  Reading Philippians during Lent . The study will run on Sundays from March 10 to April 14.  The Adult Class meets in the room next to the choir room in the Parish Hall and everyone is welcome. For more information, please contact Bob at  [email protected]

Wednesday Lenten Study
Fr. Tom is leading a study of Samuel Wells' Hanging by a Thread on Wednesdays during Lent. This series of theological reflections from an internationally known scholar and Anglican cleric focuses on the challenges of our understanding of Christ's crucifixion that arise today. The book study begins at 1:00 pm and there will be lunch at 12:30 pm for those who can attend. All are encouraged to join the Healing Service that precedes the book study, at noon in the historical church. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected]

Lenten Movies at Christ Church
As an addendum to Fr. Tom's Wednesday discussion of the book,  Hanging by a Thread , he will show two movies in the coming weeks. On Wednesday, April 10, at 11:00 am, he will show Me and Earl, and the Dying Girl, a 2015 film based on the 2012 Jesse Andrews novel. The film won the Grand Jury Prize for drama at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and tells the story of 17-year-old Greg, whose life is changed after he befriends a school classmate with cancer.

On Wednesday, April 17, at 11:00 am, Fr. Tom will show, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, a 2008 film based on a John Boyne novel. Bruno is the young son of a German soldier who serves as commandant of a WWII concentration camp. He befriends a boy on the inside of the camp fence, although his innocence about the purpose of the camp and his father's work doesn't last.

Both films are referenced in the final chapters of  Hanging by a Thread. All are welcome to view the movies independently of participation in the book discussion group. The Wednesday group will meet at 1:00 pm as scheduled both days. For more information, contact Fr. Tom at [email protected]

Men's Study Group
The Men's Discussion Group is currently reading Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others. Author Barbara Brown Taylor recounts her moving discoveries of finding the sacred in unexpected places, while teaching the world's religions to undergraduates in rural Georgia, revealing how God delights in confounding our expectations. For more information, please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .

Thursday Lenten Spiritual Practices
Want to grow spiritually but don't want another practice or discipline you'll feel guilty about not doing? Join Mother Ashton and Mother Becky to explore spirituality as a way of being engaged in our relationship to God through other people, the world around us and ourselves. We'll look at spirituality as our ongoing, evolving relationship to God and how we can live daily in an awake, holistic, and faithful way. The group meets on Thursdays at 1:00 pm from March 14 - April 11. The text is  Strength for the Journey: A Guide to Spiritual Practice  by Renee Miller and is available from Amazon in Kindle edition for $14. Hard copies will be available in the church office for $16. For more information, contact Mtr. Becky at [email protected]

Christ Church Gift Shop - Now Open!

Our new Christ Church Gift Shop, (inside the Parish House, across from the reception area), is now open on Sundays, from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm. Come browse the assortment of unique items available, including hand-made prayer beads and our new history book, which is available to parishioners through the month of March, for only $10. We'll also be adding new and seasonal items each week, so come by and check out the inventory. If you would like to make a purchase, cash, checks and credit cards are acceptable.

Our goal is to eventually have the shop open on a regular basis on weekdays, as well as Sundays, so we're looking for volunteers to serve as shopkeepers. Training will be provided. If you're interested in helping with the shop, please contact Ellen Kuehm at 912-996-3392 or at  [email protected]

Memorial Gifts
From time to time we are asked if there are things the Church can use that might be given as a memorial for a loved one or in thanksgiving for a blessing. Below is a list of opportunities for giving memorials and who you might contact about them. This is a sort of wish list; things that would be nice to have, but aren't in the budget. If you would like to make a memorial gift, please speak with the listed contact so that they know to expect the gift and can instruct you how the gift can be made. Partial gifts towards an item are possible as well.

Current Memorial Opportunities:

Christ Church Outdoor Nativity: GIFTED - THANK YOU! We have obtained a high-quality outdoor creche scene suitable for the front lawn of Christ Church, a post-Christmas opportunity that dramatically reduced the cost for such a set. The intent is to create a simple backdrop for the figures and light them at night. Some figures stand nearly six feet tall. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected]

Timpani Drum Set: $4000 We would like a pair of timpani drums to bolster our music program and be available for regular use in our music program. Contact: Kathleen Turner at [email protected]

Outdoor Stations of the Cross: GIFTED - THANK YOU!
St. Ignatius currently has a partial set of stations in the garden for outdoor use. We would like to replace the weathered stations and expand the arrangement to include all fourteen stations. The cost includes all fourteen stations and lumber to mount the stations not already installed in the garden. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected]

Acolyte Robes: $1750 We are updating our acolyte ministry and their wardrobe. Each robe costs approximately $75 each. We need various sizes/lengths.  Contact: Mtr. Katie at [email protected]

Sanctuary Chairs:  3 CHAIRS GIFTED - THANK YOU! We would like to add additional folding chairs in Christ Church in the choir area to replace the metal chairs.  Chairs are $200 each and are the same style used at the altar, dark wood with red pads. We hope to get 8, total. Contact: Kathleen Turner at [email protected]

Choir Robes: GIFTED - THANK YOU! There is a regular need to replace worn out choir robes for our adult choirs. Robes are $100 each. Contact: Kathleen Turner at [email protected]
