Diary of a Middle School Kid

Emily attends Hadley Jr. High as a 7th grader. She loves hanging out with friends and drawing different people. Mac and cheese and a peppermint hot chocolate are some of her favorite treats; however, she's now allergic to dairy.

What Emily likes about The Middle is that it's a great place to relax. She enjoys fantasy books such as The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani. And two of her favorites books are Wonder by R.J. Palacio and The One and Only Ivan by K.A. Applegate.

Emily traveled to Los Angeles; and a fond memory of that trip for her was visiting the Potato Chip Rock -- and yes, it does look like a big potato chip.

New Book Spotlight

Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi

Twelve-year-old Aru Shah has a tendency to stretch the truth in order to fit in at school.

While her classmates are jetting off to family vacations in exotic locales, she'll be spending her autumn break at home, in the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture, waiting for her mom to return from her latest archaeological trip. Is it any wonder that Aru makes up stories about being royalty, traveling to Paris, and having a chauffeur?

One day, three schoolmates show up at Aru's doorstep to catch her in a lie. They don't believe her claim that the museum's Lamp of Bharata is cursed, and they dare Aru to prove it. Just a quick light, Aru thinks. Then she can get herself out of this mess and never, ever fib again. But lighting the lamp has dire consequences. She unwittingly frees the Sleeper, an ancient demon whose duty it is to awaken the God of Destruction.

Her classmates and beloved mother are frozen in time, and it's up to Aru to save them. The only way to stop the demon is to find the reincarnations of the five legendary Pandava brothers, protagonists of the Hindu epic poem the Mahabharata, and journey through the Kingdom of Death. But how is one girl in Spider-Man pajamas supposed to do all that? Check out Aru Shah and the End of Time.

Mid-Lit: Peer Book Reviews

My name is Jordan and I reviewed the movie Wonder.

Wonder is abo ut a kid that looks different. H e felt like he was an o utsider and did not fit in.  I liked how the book and movie are nearly the same, how his parents love him for who he is, and how a lot of drama goes down in Via's school. I love everything about Wonder. It is my favorite movie in 2017.

THE MIDDLE: SRIRACHA REVIEW

By Tom Malinowski

In March, the library held the Middle School Test Kitchen: Sriracha. You watched a documentary on the hot sauce Sriracha, then experimented with the sauce on different types of foods.

You tried Sriracha on watermelon, cereal, and brownies! By popular opinion, you felt bananas and Oreo's tasted fine with the sauce -- maybe because the sweet balanced out the flavors?

It was fun to see each other's reactions to eating food you normally wouldn't pour hot sauce on!
