Newly diagnosed breast cancer patients get timely care
For the past year, our Breast Diagnostic Clinic has been providing same-day genetic counselling appointments for newly diagnosed patients, first as part of a pilot and now as a routine practice. In most centres, patients who are referred for genetic counselling book a separate appointment for a later date.
The pilot started when Genetic Counsellor Ingrid Ambus saw an opportunity to provide more timely care for patients.
Edith Rolko, Director of Pharmacy and Professional Practice Lead, was awarded the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists Dan Dasko Administrator Award in November 2018.

Human factors research: Keeping patients safe in the face of change
Understanding how new technologies change the delivery of care is not straightforward. Small changes in one part of the system can introduce major changes in others, shifting responsibility and tasks from one profession to another. New technologies can introduce unexpected errors in some circumstances, but not others.
Fortunately, this is where the science of human factors can play a role. Patricia Trbovich, PhD, is the Badeau Family Research Chair in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, and a specialist in human factors.
