Meet Ellen
United Way welcomes Ellen Dettmer as the new Director of Development.

Hello, I’d love to introduce myself. I’m Ellen Dettmer, the new Director of Development for United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States. I’m so thrilled to be joining this dynamic team.

I am a graduate of Loras College and have lived in Dubuque since graduation. My husband and I bought our first home last year and we share it with our three cats and adorable, deaf dog named Maggie.

I have long been passionate about the non-profits of Dubuque. I think we are so fortunate to live in a community that supports so many worthy causes. Along with my position at United Way, I am on the Board of Directors for the Rotary Club of Dubuque and ARK Advocates. I am an avid photographer and have lent my photography skills to Opening Doors and the Grand Opera House. When I’m not working, I can be found walking my dog, reading a good book, traveling with my husband or exploring Dubuque. I look forward to meeting new people and learning even more about the great work that United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States does!

Welcome to the team, Ellen! We are excited to have you!!
Over 40 people went Over The Edge for United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States. Each of these brave edger's raised a minimum of $1,000 to rappel down the side of the Hotel Julien Dubuque.

These brave edger's ranged from overcoming their fear of heights to being a thrill-seeker looking for fun. Danielle Peterson, President/CEO of United Way asked Clare Szalkowski, from local non-profit Clare Cares, how nervous she was on a scale of 1-10, to which Clare replied "28!" A Fear Scale of 28, and she still did it! Brian Meyer from the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dubuque overcame his fear of heights and stated, "It wasn't too bad once you get going, and this is a new and exciting way to raise awareness to show what United Way does for our community." Jodi Stricker, owner of Zazou's Bridal Boutique & Tuxedos was so excited she enlisted the help of her friend Tony LoBianco and they started the Edgers off in style, wearing a bridal jumpsuit and a tux.

With the support of the Edger's, the community members and local businesses, United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States was able to raise over $60,000. These funds will go towards the Community Impact fund, which provides funding to strong quality programs, focused on advancing the health, education and income/financial stability of those in need in our community.
90 Years, 90 New & Improved Campaigns

In celebration of our 90th year serving the tri-state area, we collaborated with community businesses and non-profits to hit our goal of 90 new and improved campaigns, and with help and support from our community we exceeded that goal! We had 97 new and improved campaigns!! We want to thank our community for supporting United Way and recognize those 97 businesses for their extra efforts to help us exceed our goal.
Starting Our Year Off Right
While we haven't officially launches our 2019-2020 campaign we have had some early support from a couple of great businesses. Our local Target store in Dubuque completed their campaign with fun activities and volunteer events with their employees. Cottingham & Butler kicked their campaign off with their annual summer picnic including a dunk tank. They will continue with fun activities like blue jeans day and more. More campaign updates to come each month!
Thank you Target and Cottingham & Butler!
