Chicago, June 26, 2018 - The
American Ladder Institute (ALI) - the only American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved developer of ladder safety standards -
has released a new standard for stepstools.
A14.11 encompasses stepstool specifications and performance requirements, instructions and safety information. Prior to the release of this standard, wood, aluminum and fiberglass ladder-type stepstools were covered by A14.1, A14.2 and A14.5, respectively.
"When the stepstool sub-committee was first established in the 1990's, our goal was to develop standards that assist both manufacturers and end users. A14.11 will do just this as it is the first standard to merge guidelines for stepstools
manufactured
from a variety of materials, ultimately making it easier for all parties to follow proper safety practices," said
Stan Kiska, Sub-Committee Chair of the ALI A14 Standards Committee.
A14.11 prescribes both general design and performance requirements for stepstools and identifies labeling procedures and use and care guidelines that must be met in order to remain in compliance with the standard.
Standards are technical specifications, developed and tested by subject experts, which prescribe rules governing the safe construction, design, testing, care and use of various types of ladders.
Dave Plotner, American National Standards Committee Chairman, stated that "One of the best ways for an industry to continuously address safety issues is through the creation of standards. Regular review and creation of these standards offers a holistic approach to ladder safety."
