Voice of the Vestry:  We don't need a canoe
by Clare Andreasson, Senior Warden

"What you need," said my father, in a voice weighted with authority and experience, "is a canoe."

My husband and I and our two children were in the midst of a long season of changes for our young family which left us feeling fragmented, fearful, and disconnected from one another.  I was frantically looking for someone to tell us what to do to make things better.  My father was happy to oblige.

"Buy a canoe," he said.  "It will be the perfect way for you to go out as a family and experience the beauty of the waters of northern Michigan together."

And so we did.  We bought a canoe.  We installed a hitch, borrowed a trailer, and spent hours creating an elaborately engineered hanging system for the canoe in our garage which even our smallest child could manage.  We talked a lot about canoeing.

The canoe has been stored elegantly in our garage for the past eleven years.  We have never used it.

Grave Marker for Connie Vaughan
Rev. Kathryn and a couple members of the Daughters of the King committed Connie Vaughan's ashes to the earth last week in the small cemetery in Onekama.  We noticed that there is no marker to indicate where Connie has been laid, and would like to provide a marker for her grave site.  If you would like to donate toward a total cost of $395, please contact Ellen in the office.

Friday Lunch still seeking team leader for
First Friday
Any chance you can help with this vital ministry? The team is in place, they just need a leader to coordinate, plan and shop. Two people together could also tackle the job. Training is available, so don't let inexperience hold you back.  Have fun while serving others!

Please prayerfully consider this ministry and contact Kate Wood with questions or to volunteer!

Episcopal Peace Fellowship announces first annual award for peace and justice work

The EPF chapter at Grace has decided to acknowledge the peace and justice work of someone in our community. The person selected will have their name placed on our Grace Peace Pole, located on Washington St. in front of the parish hall. Nomination forms are available in the church office or click here. Nominations will be accepted from July 1 through August 15 at 5 pm.

Pastoral Care at Grace
In order to address pastoral care needs of the whole parish, not only those who are ill, homebound, or otherwise unable to be physically present for church services, we are currently in the process of re-visioning how we can more effectively tend to those needs. In order to move forward with our plans, we would like to identify which service each of us usually attends. Please take the time to fill out a blank white card (located on the table in the Commons, next to the basket) with your current contact information, the names of those in your household, and which service you attend, and place the card in the basket. Thank you!

Wondering about office hours?
We recently changed our office hours to better meet our needs for administrative staffing. You may be aware that the office is now open Monday through Thursday from 9am to 3pm. We are closed on Fridays. In order to decrease confusion and improve communications, you should be aware that Ann Hackett, Buildings and Grounds Coordinator, and Ellen Schrader, Office Coordinator work different schedules.

Ellen: Mon. - Wed. 9am to 3pm
Ann: Tues. - Thurs. 9am to 3pm

Please contact us if you have any questions.

Work on pipes in Parish Hall Building July 9-13

It was about a year ago that a part of the cast iron plumbing in the Parish Hall (installed in 1964) failed and spewed sewage water into the kitchen and the basement. The vestry authorized an immediate temporary fix and then sought estimates for a permanent solution to prevent a recurrence. Next month just about all of the cast iron pipes in the Parish Hall building will be replaced with PVC pipes. We are grateful for the resources at hand to enable this costly repair.

The Parish Hall building will be out of commission during the week of July 9-13. Individuals and groups already scheduled in this building will be notified separately and accommodations will be made for an alternate meeting space on campus where possible and necessary. (This work does not affect the Sanctuary or the Commons.) Please make a note on your calendar

Turn in your Oleson's receipts to benefit the Grace Food Pantry!

Oleson's Community Share Program

Here's how it works:
  1. You shop at Oleson's for groceries (liquor sales do not qualify for points)
  2. Turn in your receipts to the church.  Look for the envelope on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall, and place your receipts inside it.
  3. We submit receipts back to Oleson's
  4. We are granted cash rewards for the food pantry ($1 spent on groceries = 1 cent in Community Share points)

For every $5000 in receipts we submit, we receive $50 in cash for our food pantry.  Every little bit helps!

Thank you for participating!
