Thirty-five
years ago, NL preservationists established the New London Maritime Society to create a home for local maritime history at the Custom House. NLMS now operates the Custom House Maritime Museum & Library, educates New London's 300 third graders
with a year-long local history program, and preserves the three major lighthouses leading into this historic port.
In 2018, New London's US Custom House turns 185 years old.
We are working to establish an endowment so that we can continue telling the stories of our waterfront for generations to come. Won't you help?

Bully for Woolies: Victorian Sailors Stitchery + 4

'Victorian Woolies: Sailors Stitchery and Other Pastimes' celebrates a recent gift of 22 'woolies', or Victorian sailor embroideries, from
Charles B. Moss, Jr. plus
the loan for four
spectacular woolwork pieces from a private collection.
Our four added woolies are on loan to us only through Thursday, August 3.
Sailor's Woolwork of the Battle of Bomarsund,
16.5" x 25.5" , ca. 1865-1870.
This piece depicts five British navy vessels from the white and red fleets pursuing three Russian ships during the Crimean War's Battle of Bomarsund. A Russian fort at the head of an inlet is firing at the English from several cannons. Amongst woolies, multiple ships and depictions of historical scenes are rare. This piece depicts interesting landfall with trees and buildings; the sky and clouds add to the sense of movement that the ships and their sails convey.

■ Opening: The Art of the Tugboat. Friday, August 10, 6 PM. This exhibition celebrates a donation of tugboat models and paintings to NLMS from collector Steve Martin. Artists contributing to the exhibition include Steve Cryan, Paul Farrell, Hardie Gramatky, and Marek Sarba, and Day photojournalists.

■ Illustrated Talk - Benefit: Tugboats, Steamships & Trains, from New York to Maine, with Steve Cryan. Sunday, September 9, 4 PM. Artist-historian Steve Cryan presents an

Steve is a watercolor artist, illustrator, modelmaker, and photographer. He has curated the
holiday train show at the Connecticut River Museum for 25 years. The official artist for the

The Atlantic Paranormal Society!
We're taking the big blue Project O boat out to Ledge Lighthouse with a team from TAPS - The Atlantic Paranormal Society (a group -but not the TV personalities- associated with the long-running Ghost Hunters television series 2004-2016 ). We provide the history of both Ledge and Race Rock Lights, TAPS gives the paranormal overview. It's a fundraiser for NLMS & local lighthouse preservation.

Tuesday, July 31, from 5-6:30 p.m., as a number of our gubernatorial candidates participate in a forum on Arts, Culture, and the Future of CT's Economy. Several of the candidates have agreed to attend (Joseph Ganim, Oz Griebel, Rod Hanscomb,
Tim Herbst,
Ned Lamont, Marisa Manley, David Stemerman), and the rest are invited (Mark Boughton, Steve Obsitnik, Kameron Scott, Bob Stefanowski, Micah Welintukonis).
They all have also been asked to respond to arts and culture questionnaires.

We met up with Linda Gramatky Smith in Essex. Linda is the daughter of Hardie Gramatky, who created the children's book Little Toot. Linda brought us several original works, left, for the Art of the Tugboat exhibition which opens at the Custom House on August10.

Everybody is welcome in the shop, you don't need a museum ticket to come in. MUSEUM SHOP gifts have an extra feel good factor: when you shop with us, all your purchases go towards supporting the museum, exhibitions, & educational programs. Above, note cards and books for young people in the SHOP.
The Coast Guard has made these waterproof labels available to people with small boats and paddle boards free of charge. Should your boat slip into the water, this ID will let the USCG find you, without doing a full search at sea. We've got some. Come pick one up at our desk.
