Save the Date: 2018 Joint Arts Education Conference

Every two years, the Joint Arts Education Conference (JAEC) brings together Arizona’s arts educators, teaching artists, and arts administrators for a full day of professional development. 

Presented through a joint partnership of the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Arizona Department of Education's Office of Arts Education, the conference offers attendees a unique opportunity to gather and explore key areas and trends in education and the significant role arts educators play in the academic, social, and personal success of students.

Introducing Our 2018 AZ Creative Aging Teaching Artists
10 teaching Artists graduate Creative Aging training program
The Arizona Commission on the Arts is proud to announce the graduates of our second AZ Creative Aging Teaching Artist Institute. These 10 artists, who come from cities and towns across the state and specialize in a variety of artistic disciplines, join the inaugural cohort of Teaching Artist Institute graduates, applying their skills and knowledge to work with older adult populations.

Your opportunity to let Arizona's leaders know how we're doing
Each year, the Arts Commission invites its constituents to provide a candid and completely anonymous appraisal of the agency and its work. This feedback is used in the construction of annual reports to the Governor of Arizona and the Federal Government, as well as for internal performance measures, evaluation, and planning. We hope you'll take just a few minutes to share your perspective.
State Budget Includes $2 Million for Arts in Arizona
The $10.4 billion fiscal year 2019 budget passed by the legislature and signed by Governor Doug Ducey on May 3 includes a $2 million appropriation to the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Derived from interest accrued on the state’s Rainy-day Fund, this allocation will not increase overall state spending.
NEA Announces $445,000 in Grants to Arizona Arts Organizations
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) announced its second round of funding for FY2018 last month.
11 Arizona arts organizations were awarded a total amount of $445,000, including Grand Canyon Music Festival, Mesa Arts Center, Lead Guitar, and Phoenix's Eastlake neighborhood.

California: School leaders discuss school improvement through the arts
Gathering last month at renowned architect Frank Gehry’s studio in Los Angeles, district and school administrators participating in Turnaround Arts: California discussed many of the challenges they have faced in using the arts as a vehicle for raising student achievement and increasing engagement.
Oregon: ArtCore program helps teachers integrate arts into curriculum
The Lane Arts Council’s ArtCore program helps teachers to build and implement a curriculum that integrates the arts into other academic subjects at their schools. Several school districts in western Oregon participate in the program, which supports arts-integrated lessons aligned with national and state academic and arts standards for middle school students. 
Indiana: Partnership provides arts workshops for Indiana teachers
A partnership between the University of Notre Dame and South Bend Community Schools provides workshops for teachers to enhance their teaching through the arts, including techniques that some have pursued to help with standardized testing.

Tucson based poet and Poetry Out Loud coach, Rachel Mindell, speaks to the power memorization plays both in the classroom and with poetry. Rachel served as a coach for the 2018 Poetry Out Loud program in southern Arizona.

Webinar: Putting the CYD National Action Blueprint to Work

Learn how to use the recently released Creative Youth Development (CYD) National Action Blueprint as a resource in work that advances the role of creativity in youth development. Led by the CYD National Partnership and a cross-sector coalition, this one-hour, interactive forum is designed for CYD practitioners and alumni, funders, researchers, and allied youth sector leaders.

Creative youth development is a long-standing, intentional practice that integrates creative skill-building, inquiry, and expression with positive youth development principles. In these programs, young people create original work-including animated films, 3-D printed sculptures, dance and theater productions, musical compositions, curated book collections, and more-and apply their creative skills to solve problems, shape their lives, and imagine and build the world in which they want to live.

Arizona Out-of-School Time Awards

The Annual Arizona Out-of-School Time Awards of Excellence recognizes innovative programs and staff members for their exemplary work in providing and promoting quality youth development programs for Arizona’s children. 3 finalists and 1 winner in each of five categories will be recognized.
VSA Intersections: Arts and Special Education Conference

Theatre Fellowship – Yuma Art Center

The theatre fellowship program gives a theatre artist an opportunity to develop their directorial practice by directing a full-length performance with technical and administrative support from the Yuma Art Center. The selected fellow will direct a full-length production for the Yuma Art Center’s annual dinner theatre production in February 2019.

2018 CCSSO National Conference on Student Assessment

Since 1971, NCSA has been the trusted forum for assessment practitioners to learn and reflect upon current and emerging trends in education and educational assessments. Each year the conference draws around 1,000 attendees including federal, state, and district agencies, test publishers, educational consultants, university faculty, and organizations supporting technology, education, and business. The conference takes place over a three-day period in June, including 60-minute symposia, 90-minute symposia, and 45-minute roundtables.
